I have just completed modifying a commercial dob base to fit my 6" f/8 Intes Mak Newt.
I looked at various alt az systems but the clear winner for both cost and quality was the STS dob base from Rob Teeter. He does not make these to fit custom orders so I bought the base he would use for his 8" STS scopes. I picked up the base from Rob on my way home from the Winter Star Party to save even more $ on shipping...
I already have a nice set of Parallax rings for the Intes so it was a simple matter to shim the parallax rings up to the size needed to put the STS altitude bearings exactly over the Teflon seats. I needed to shim up by 1" on either side. I went low tech with this, cutting 11" circles (the STS Alt bearings are 10" in diameter) from a piece of 1" (3/4" dressed size) pine shelving I already had on hand. Another pair of 11"circles were cut from a pice of 1/4" plywood (3/16" dressed) I had on hand.
Simply stated, I made a sandwich, with the 1" pine bolted to the Parallax rings with flat-heads and then bolting through the Alt bearing, the 1/4 ply and the 1" pine with 2 1/2" bolts, nuts and washers.
The scope balances very well with a 50mm Stellarvue Correct view finder, a Kendrick dew strip and a Kendrick Vinyl Dew shield. (I had to add the original Intes rings and plates to have the tube far enough up to avoid the bottom hitting the rocker box).
Cost, including bolts, paint and stain, $425 which is pretty good, I think.
I will be running a 12vdc power supply to the cooling fan and the dew heaters later on. Later on I will also be painting flat black and staining to match the STS.
Pics of the entire process follow...
Dave
