I have a Meade 6000 80mm ED APO on its way. new
      #5679517 - 02/14/13 01:41 PM

So what should I expect from this scope, it will piggy-back on my 14" LX850?

Does anyone have this scope, what are your experiences?

Tony

Looks like a really nice scope. It should perform well being a fpl53 tripet. It's made by Kunming United so the mechanicals should be top notch as well. Looking forward to your impressions... I've had my eye on this scope for a while.

Used the Meade 6000 80mm from my deck ~40 times. Ive been very happy with it's quality. Perfect color correction on all targets, absolutely no Purple fringe. Coatings look good.
The mechanics are excellent as well, nice tube finish, rotatable focuser, locking dew shield and metal threaded tube end cap.
Came with Meade 5000 diagonal(not the best diagonal out there-IMHO), decent case, 26mm EP, all metal Red dot finder, sturdy rings and short vixen dovetail. I do wish the dovetails was an couple of inches longer to balance my ES25-100 EP better.
I'm sure you will enjoy the FPL-53 optical quality, hope the 850 works well for you too !

Thanks KevH for the info on manufacturer.

jochsner, I did not realize it came with a red dot finder. It does not mention this on Meade's web site.

Yah that is what I'm going to do with the 5000 I just bought. I am going to try to mount it where the original starlock goes and the starlock up on the OTA.

Exactly, I am also going to piggy back my 90mm ETX, Meade love fest I guess.

My concern is going to be balancing the OTA itself. The way the system works is if you have the starlock mounted on the side you have a sliding weight to counter it. If you put a heavy triplet there instead, I am not sure there is going.. well I am POSITIVE there is not going to be enough weight on the other side to counter it. I wonder if Meade has a heavier weight?

Also did you order an additional counter weight? On the 12" I am testing, with just a telrad, 50mm finder scope and another 50mm finder scope with a camera attached, I ended up with the counter weights all the way at the end of the shaft. With my heavy CCD camera I wish I had 10 more pounds.

I have 2 extra 22# weights. And, yes, may have an issue with balance for the 80mm, but, I figure I can fashion a weight for the plate if need be...

Here is a closeup of the finder, it is a battery powered red circle finder. It has three options: +, circle, and + with a smaller circle in the middle. Very awesome, I have never used one of these before. It seems well build, no manufacture marks on it that I can see:

Here is the scope in its carry case. Very nice case, although, none of the foam is cute out for the accessories. Will need to do that myself:

Well, here it is. The dew shield is retracted. This is a very well built scope, I am impressed. It has a rotating focuser for AP composition. It also has a screw/compression lock for the focuser draw tube, to lock focus. Focuser seems very smooth and well built. There is also a dove tail for the finder, although, I am struggling to figure out how it mounts to the scope. The pedestal for the finder does not seem to fit. Will play with it. Can not wait to get it mounted on my 14" LX850:
