Link doesn't seem to point to the right thing. Are you sure it is copper theives and not frustrated amature astronomers darkening the sky?

Unfortunately for the copper thieves, they sometimes brighten the skies momentarily with their deaths at the hands of 13,800-volts. They are that crazy to break into a substation and try to steal copper busbars that are connected to live circuits, and end up as greasy smoke for their trouble. But they do get a consolation prize, in the form of a Darwin Award.
