When I start out the evening I always start by grabbing this "beer can" eyepiece. It's a 40mm 2" wide field eyepiece I believe from the 70's. Was this neagler's first design? Televue japan

No, no. The Wide Fields came much later, in 1983. They were later replaced by the Panoptics.

Here's a primer on TeleVue history: http://www.company7.com/televue/telal.html

Great article Thomas. Looks like this eyepiece had a famous beginning. If you ever see one I would recommend you pick one up. Great "heavy" piece of glass. My wife's favorite eyepiece because of the easy eye relief. Only one problem, when I reach for it in the dark, sometimes I come up with a miller lite. Maybe that's not so much of a problem.

Depending on the outdoor temperature, grabbin' a can o' cold instead of an eyepiece might not actually be a problem.

Really cool old eyepiece. Hang on to it, I know I would. Those eyepieces are very rare on this side of the pond.

TV 26mm NJ rocks. Meade RGO 10.5 rocks. My Unbranded 12.5 Ortho I picked up with a scope is superb.
TV 26 circle NJis a REALLY good EP. Heck, the 32, 26, 21 and 17 are the ones I use all the time. The Early TV plossls are very good.

Love em, the only ep's I still use, a complete set of circle NJ's from 1982, perform well in any scope I've used them in, dobs, refractors, SCT's and maks.

Still like to get a 13mm and 10.5 circle NJ. Never liked the 7.4 as much as the others. ER is too small on these compared to a good ortho. My 7mm RGO was a slightly better EP, stupidly sold that 7mm RGO to buy a Vixen LV. Other than ER that was a step down. Not that the LV was bad, but contrast was not like the TV or RGO's

'Recently acquired a nice 10.4 circle NJ smoothie - in its original box - with the purchase of a 30 year-old Astroscan. This older design has a more pronounced volcano top than the 10.5 TV Plossl.

Since it duplicates some of my existing focal lengths, I'm unsure at this point if I'm going to keep it...

I love my beer can 13mm Nagler of 1980's vintage. Weighs in at several pounds but it's an awesome eyepiece. Even works in my 10 inch Zhumell Dob without putting it out of balance. Favorite for my f/5 Genesis. When I bought it big DOB's were comeing into vogue. I often wondered who might be the first person killed by someone dropping a brute like this from atop a ladder. Thankfully I've never heard of such a thing. Bill

I keep going back to this old Tuthill 30mm Plossl that I bought in 1987.

I understand. I seem to always grab by mistake the Jameson.

Wow, favorite old eyepiece and Roger Tuthill in the same thread, inspires me to post this.

That's Roger on the left, I'm the short kid, admiring the finder on that 12" Newt. It used what became my favorite wide angle monster, the classic 37mm giant Erfle that was used on the Army's M71D straight telescope. The finder's optical axis crossed the main tube, with a mirror on the other side.

My favorite old eyepiece would be my 16mm Goloc. I got it with my 8" Cave Refl many years ago.

Tuthill 35mm and Tuthill 30mm ( pre-Ultima prototype ) exceptional by itself, absolutely remarkable when barlowed. They remain at the top after going up against a vast array of highly touted, now gone, expensive eyepieces.

great thread, Despite all the fancy new ones I have, I still love my Panoptic 22, TV NJ widefield 19mm, and my Meade smoothie 14mm series 4000 UWA. When I do grab n Go I use my old RKE eyepieces with my refractors. bob
