Very nice pictures and nice website. Good find Xavier! It's a shame there are not more details on the scopes on the webpage - maybe my Flemish is not what it used to be!
What is the refractor in the lab room?
Last question, have you been to it? I have been to Ghent visiting friends - may actually go again this summer...for another reason!

Hi Roberto, There is a special website (http://www.rug-a-pien.be/_historische_telescoop.html) about the historical telescope. It's a 9" Steinheil. No idea about the telescope in the lab room. Contacted the people of the observatory for more information.
Ghent is nearby from where I live. Would be nice to go together.

Neat scope.
waarvoor dient dit instrument? graag uw reactie! = What is this instrument?like your comment!
That is a Solar intensity or Sun shine recorder. I forget the exact latin name for it. As the sun moves across the sky, the lens records the amount of sunlight present against time of day by burning a varying stripe across graph paper held in the semicircular part. Here is a better photo of a similar solar incidince recorder
Sunshine recorders use solar cells today. There are a lot of meterorlogical instruments at the observitory. wonderful place, they seem to appreciate the classics while also making room for a meade. Wish I had that Siderial grandfather clock.

The Volkssterrenwacht Armand Pien (Belgian weatherman) houses the superb 22,8 cm (f/11) Monckhoven refractor (1880) by Carl August Steinheil & Sohne and mount by Thomas Cooke & Sons.
But the observatory in the heart of Gent probably also houses a refractor made by Dutch ATM Piet G. Meesters (could anyone confirm? - see right in lower photo).
Both beautiful classic refractors/instruments

Yes the telescope on the green pier is a P.Meesters one.It looks like a 120mm refractor.I have owned several of these ( still have a 80mm )and most of them are great with lenses of Steinheil,Busch,Carl Bamberg etc.

This one is made between 1938 and 1946.It has a lens of NEDOPTIFA UTRECHT ( NEDerlandse OPTIek FAbrieken UTRECHT )After 1946 the company moved to Zeist and the name on the lens cell changed to NEDOPTIFA ZEIST.

Thanks for the confirmation Jan... it looks like that this particular Piet G. Meesters (1887-1964) refractor was built in the early 1950s...

Any idea of its value ( for insurance purposes ? ) Of course they could insure it at the value/cost of a new replacement refractor & mount (let's say Euro 2500.00)
