Another Tripod / Mount Question new
      #54977 - 02/14/04 11:53 AM

Although readers can be forgiven for thinking it may be a permanent state of mine rather than just appertaining to tripods and mounts, I get some kind of mental blockage when I try to sift through the jargon of this inconvenience associated with our hobby which comes under the general heading "tripods and mounts"-- and not JUST because of that illogical numerical system associated with Bogens that I complained about to no avail a few weeks ago in a separate post.

Right -- for a change I'll get to the point !

I'm stuck with an EQ1 tripod /GE mount that came to these shores from China with a 102mm f5 refractor.

Is there any half -decent alt -az type (of smoothish -operating pan -head variety)readily available that I could simply ( because I'm a simple person ) bolt straight through the top of the tripod in place of the wretched thing that is stuck in it at present ?

My intention is to be able to attach either aforementioned scope or binoculars up to 20 x 80s to the as yet imaginary pan head mount.

Anyone who had this present set-up to contend with would probably understand better why it is I spend more time on this forum than I do in my backyard or anywhere else at nights !

Yours hopefully , Kenny.

Hi Kenny, it soulds like you want this AltAz mount head to do double duty for you. Hold the 102 telescope and your favorite large binoculars...does the 102 have a some type of dovetail plate or something? How would you want to connect it to the mount?

Hi Tom,

The scope attaches into rings. No other way that I can see.

No wedge or dovetail attached to the scope tube.

As I said when it comes to mount jargon I'm stumped.

The base section of the rings have flat sections which are drilled and tapped in the middle of them so they can be screwed onto a male upward -pointing thread of same spec. such as is found on standard camera tripods.

This I took to be pretty standard fayre -- I presumed the thing I was looking for would accomodate that.

Anyone who has ever bought a Chinese short -tube with EQ mount should know what I'm talking about.

If this point becomes problematical ,I could always post a photo I suppose.

Then again perhaps it is partly if not wholly BECAUSE of this arrangement that I am so dissatisfied with the existing set -up.

Thanks for trying to help Tom .

Regards Kenny.

Hey Kenny,

I'd toss the entire EQ1 and start over. I bought the Orion AZ 3 Alt Az mount(~$180) about 3 years ago and have used it about as many times. Does your 102mmF5 have 1/4 mounting blocks? If so I would find a nice Manfrotto tripod and get the 3433/501 fluid head. It will work fine for OTAs up to 5 kg. All Manfrotto tripods have 3/8"-16 mounting bolt. You can always get the TeleOptics GR2 alt az mount later if you want to mount bigger socpes on the tripod.

I thought the Az3 was a good investment at the time because it includes the tripod, mount and slow motion control cables. I am much happier with the GR2 deluxe without the slo mo. I think the UA Unistar light would be very good for a small scope as well.

Thanks Erik,

To be truthful , I'd already more or less decided what you are saying to be the BEST option , but I was just trying to figure a way of putting the tripod to SOME use.

I do a lot of my scope and 15 x 70 viewing actually from my commercial vehicle, sometimes sitting sideways in the driver seat with the tripod set low wedged around the passenger seat with the scope/ bino facing out the passenger window , sometimes, if the location allows, sitting on a box in the rear of the vehicle with the same set-up aiming through the open back doors ( which is when I am sometimes mistaken for a special police constable trying to catch cows or horses breaking the speed limit in a field)

This of course for terrestrial viewing in daylight from high vantage points accessible by vehicle , and when in Wales , ALWAYS without wearing wellington boots -- especially if there are sheep around.

Even if it is windy , sturdiness is seldom the problem.

My dissatisfaction is with the lack of perfectly smooth and precise up and down and side to side movement and a rock steady , quick settling instrument when I've found my target, and is little better really than my window mount coupled to an L -bracket -- which is another typical example of something that "does a job" without making me feel any more orgasmic than the sighting of a sheep 80 yards away at 40x in the 102mm scope would.

I feel like I need a Rolls Royce and I'm stuck with a Jeep if you understand my analogy.

Perhaps when I get my tripod and mount up to standard ,it might inspire me to actually buy an instrument capable of providing a world -class image at over 10x magnification, but another thing which worries me is the scenario if I end up buying a top notch spotting scope from one of the Big Four ( or five ) and find it cannot be mounted on to a tripod and mount I've spent enough on to have bought myself a pair of Canon 10 x 30 IS binos , for instance.

The apparant lack of universality amongst these spotting scopes is a likely cause of me being so crazy !

Regards -- Kenny.

Kenny,
"without making me feel any more orgasmic than the sighting of a sheep 80 yards away "

I always get just a little worried when I hear the word orgasmic and sheep in the same sentence. Perhaps I am a little sensitive to this since I am a Montana native.:-)

Hi Dan ,

I hadn't realised that the Montana and Welsh natives had such a rare sensitivity in common :-)

There is a joke about Sheep in lingerie on cliff -edges -- but I'd better not got there on this forum !

Regards -- Kenny.

Re your tripod/mount question. I have a Stellarvue scope and was thinking of mounting it on the Altaz. As it comes without rings (it uses a clamp fitting with three 1/4-20) I would need an adaptor plate. The guys at http://www.telescopes-direct.com/ in London said they could knock one up for about £20. Check them out, maybe it was only because I was thinking of buying the whole mount, but who knows? Good luck!
