FYI...now amended on the Orion web site to 05/02/2013 So what's with these guys, are we about to relive the recent Meade mount nightmare? I had an earlier thread about deciding between the new AZ Atlas and the T-Rex Apex, my attention has just focused down on the T-Rex, and I will also take a hard look at the the DSV-3 as an alternative. I am inclining toward the T-Rex due to some recent experiments on motor control done by a fellow CNer...I really like the idea of a powered option. That with Sky Commander would pretty much fulfill my basic requirements. I just don't think I want to get to the next AZ Atlas "delivery" date and find Orion announcing a new delay.

Don't quite understand your comment about "Meade nightmare." The mounts (under the SkyWatcher label) are already in the hands of users and appear to be doing well.

I'm talking more about the repeated delays than any concern with changing prices, buggy software, and the mechanical issues with Meade's last two mounts. Personally I expect the AZ Atlas to be terrific quality wise, and the AZ EQ6-Pro feedback so far supports this. Heck Unk, I own two Atlas' right now and swear by them. But this is at least the third delay in delivery time for folks who have been waiting and planning for the new mount. Guess I just wish that Orion would say something like "Hey, we just want to ensure that the new AZ Atlas is everything we said it would be and will let our customers know when it's ready to ship." Putting repeated failed shipping deadlines out does not boost anyone's confidence in the retailer and tends to make folks look elsewhere for alternatives. Nobody can make factories or shipping firms meet time lines, but IMHO I believe it's a good idea to manage customer expectations about the delivery of new products...it's good for the customers, it's good for business
Clear Skies,
Brian

Since I just bought an OTA for this mount and just sold my old scope expecting to get this mount in March, this delay is quite irritating to say the least.

Currently available up here in Canuck land as Skywatcher. KWtelescopes, for one, will readily ship to the US. Should be no customs for astro gear.

I contacted them and, in addition to a significant shipping charge, both a duty and a customs brokerage fee will also be charged by the government and the carrier, which together are larger than the shipping charge. Plus, they are about out of the mounts.

Thanks Pat and Lee Jay, I appreciate the info. I just solved my issues with the extended wait and/or haggling with customs by ordering a T-Rex from Ed at DSP

Not just the mounts at Orion. I ordered an xx14g back on 1-11-13. Was origonally given a ship date of 2-24-13, then 2-5, then back to 2-24, then 3-26, then 4-20, and finally (hopefully) 4-21-13..... we'll see.

If the Skywatcher and the Orion mounts are the same, who would think that it would take so much longer to paint the mount black?

Beside that, some of us solar observers would rather have a white mount anyway. A black mount gets hot as hades in the sunshine. I'd like some white dovetail plates too if I could get them. Is there such a thing as white anodizing?

Good for you Lee Jay! Glad to hear you are getting the mount, did you go through Orion or up to Canada?
