I'm about to embark on a 261 mile one way trip for a used dob, just interested in seeing who else has succumbed to the insanity.

My round trip for merely an overnight observing session is 200-400 miles.

I drove 800 miles round trip to pick up the Horsetrail Cave. It was worth it!

I drove 500 miles to pick up my most recent telescope purchase and then turned around and drove 500 miles home (I had a co-driver to help with the return trip). I'm no Bob S. but I guess I'm nuts.

When I purchased my NP-101, the seller lived within driving distance, about 120 miles one way. Rather than risk shipping it, driving seemed like the best way to conclude the transaction. The seller delivered to the scope to my office... He did the driving, I bought lunch.

Well the deed is done 545 miles (yahoo mileage was a little off)Sore rump and a new scope for the wife. My previous record was a 258 mile round trip. If they continue to double in distance Im in trouble.

Heck, I had a 200 mile per day commute for ten years. I consider 7-8 hours a reasonable drive for a 2 night observing trip and 18-20 hours reasonable for a 5 night or longer observing trip.

260 miles would be a piece of cake.

Around here, traveling west is the problem.. about 5 miles is the limit without going a long ways north.

I don't mind driving long distances to pick up toys or for dark skies, I enjoy a good road trip, and it helps that my car cost only around $30 to fill a full tank

Take the bus to the scope, and rent a vehicle to drive home. It will save both $$ and mileage on your vehicle.

The next time I buy a telescope, I will drive and personally pick it up. Too many horror stories about shipping damage.

I'm not getting a used scope but I'm driving to New Jersey from Louisville and back in two days. 11+ hours each way. Crazy? Saving shipping, getting a face to face, taking the safety of transport upon my shoulders.

On the lower end of these wonderous stories... (Yessongs), I did get a great deal on the z12 and drove about 795 miles each way on a hot summers event. Cleveland to Council Bluffs IA. Love the windmill farms of Iowa!

I understand the piece of mind to meet the other person and assurance of shipping and handling.

Back in 1986 I found a good deal on a red 13.1" Coulter Odyssey listed in the Starry Messenger (back before the internets). Problem was that I lived in Connecticut and the scope was in California. By coincidence I was planning a trip out to California to visit a friend so I arranged to buy the scope and “carry” it home. I brought a large backpack with not much in it but clothing. After I bought the scope I took the optics out and packed them in my backpack. I put wheels on the bottom of the ground board and was able to wheel the scope through the airport and check it as baggage. Try doing that in an airport today. I changed planes in Chicago and watched the baggage handlers having fun with the big red tube using it like a megaphone. I figured that being a curiosity for them was good and indeed it made it back to Connecticut undamaged. I still use that scope to this day.

I've driven 800 miles round trip for both a star party and a scope puchase. When you've something to look forward to driving's a snap.

I flew to OH, rented a minivan and drove 562 miles back to Central MA for a Ceravolo HD216. I had to check out the scope before I bought it. I would do it again in a minute, worst part was being seen driving a minivan!

Great story Jim, My wife and I love those old red tubes. Thats the very same scope I drove the 500+ miles for. These old scopes dont the recognition they deserve for the valuable role they have played in amature astronomy. not so much on planetary but quiet impressive on deep sky .If I came across a reasonably priced 17.1 I'd drive twice as far.
