LX200 suggestions
      #56868 - 02/18/04 08:35 AM

I have had a LX200 10" classic for about 5 years. The scope is mounted in a "home-dome" on a pier I welded up. Scope works well but my observing time comes and gos depending on business pressures. I would like a couple of suggestions.

I have a couple of the early ETX scopes (one Astro., one spotting). I think it would be neat to mount the spotting model on the LX200. I see this in several post here. How do you mount other equipment on the LX200? Is there a recommended track system or mounting system for accessory mounting? I don't want to start drilling holes and stuff without some guidance.

This unit is pre-gps. I have a number of hand held GPS units and can always determine Lat and Lon. Is there any benefit to the GPS models other than not having to key in the location when the scope is moved?

I have a 10" GPS and have mounted my ETX On a scopestuff rail and rings. Scopestuff There are a few other options like Losmandy rails and rings, a little more expensive but I've been told a little sturdier. You should be able to mount the rails without drilling any holes they should mount to the OTA using existing holes (mine did) Balance will ned to be dealt with when you piggyback another scope on top.

The GPS will set the time and location, and The Autostar II has a few more bells and wistles than the orig LX200 controller.

Thanks for the link to Scopestuff. I saw one of your other writeups and Googled till I gagged looking for their URL.

Is there a link to a writeup on balancing an LX200. It may be in the manual but I never had a need to use it. I have put the Pictor rig on the scope with focuser and it handled that fine.

Mr. Grizz.... Sure hope Scopestuff appreciates your referral. I just got tired of looking at the stuff and ordered one each.

Seriously, will the Ronchi tester grating help in collimation or is it just for optics checks?

Also, does anyone know if the solid bushings for the mirror focus assembly really work well?

If you mean the EZ-focus kit they sell I installed it on mine and it improved the backlash and gave it a nice smooth feel.

It's amazing how well the focuser works with the bearings, very smooth. If your intested in them e-amil me and I can give you the bearing and washer numbers for McMaster Carr.

Installed the ScopeStuff this weekend. Mount for ETX and Balance Rail. Went together slick. No problems, no drilling and very little to figure out. Will need one more weight (two comes with the kit). I put a lot of work into a Leica Zoom lens recently after reading a review or two here. Got the lens in one place and the adapter in another. In looking at test detail on moon craters, the zoom just doesn't come up to Celestron and Meade lenses. With the ETX piggybacked, it's like having two lenses mounted all the time. So now I have two finder scopes and two viewing scopes. Really nice. Thanks folks.

I had a bar made up at work out of alluminum. The Apex has a mounting system built into the OTA so it is attached in two places, and adjustable along the rail for balancing.
