Just built it with Eclipse. To build, download the source via svn. Then:

1. Import trunk/app as an existing-source Android 2.3.3 project.
2. In the Project Properties, go to Java Build Path and Libraries.
2.1. Press "Add JARs..." and select libGoogleAnalytics.jar from trunk/app/libs/libGoogleAnalytics.jar
2.2. Press "Add External JARs..." and select the two jars from trunk/tools/libs

I renamed my copy to "Astro Observer", removed the very annoying defaulting to auto mode each time, removed Google Analytics snooping (not that I really care about snooping), and posted an apk here. Thought it might be useful for people with Kindle Fire and other devices that don't have access to Android Market and hence can't download the official Google Sky Map.

Some non-market devices have resistive screens. Little hard to use on those.

I finally got Vortex on the Coby. Coby has a resistive screen so using Vortex a little strange.

Astro Tools had the plus/minus size bar which does help with resistive tablets.

My main Android device (Archos 43) has a resistive screen. The app works just fine on it--you tap on the + or - to zoom in and out. That's consistent with how zooming works in other apps on non-multitouch screens: web browser, SkySafari, LunarMap, APV PDF Viewer, etc.

I suppose one could do a slider--I don't know if that would be preferable, but it might be a worthwhile option.

By the way, I've renamed this again, this time to Open Star Map. "Astro Observer" was too grandiose for something with so limited a catalog.

I posted a version that has an option to zoom with the volume keys.

It's now in the Amazon Appstore.

Apparently, it has some problems on the Fire HD so Amazon has pulled it. I am trying to have it go back up for the regular Fire.

If anyone has the Fire HD and is interested in Open Star Map, email me.

Alexander:

Is there any hope of expanding the databases?

Jon

I have not been able to rebuild the databases. They didn't make it easy...

And here as I read the thread I was about to get all excited and go download it....guess not!

Yes, I at least would be interested. I may be the only Fire HD user out here, though...

I finally have a version that might work on the HD. Based on several hours of debugging with the Kindle HD emulator, it looks like the HD reports that has a compass but it doesn't actually have it. Aargh.

Anyway, you can download from: https://code.google.com/p/astroobserver/downloads/list

Let me know if it works for you.

Amazon has approved Open Star Map, so now it's in the Amazon Appstore for all Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD users. It's basically the same as Google Sky Map, with a few tweaks to make it work better on Kindles.
