Hi Joe,
I was a kid of the cold war for sure. I remember the "missles of October" and all that scary stuff that went on back then. So yes, this is an interesting acquisition for my collection, along with my Russian Lomo. The Lomo was made a few years after the USSR dissolved, but this Zeiss was made "behind the Iron Curtain" during the height of all of that crazy stuff. But it was made to educate as you say, not to eradicate and that is neat. That and all the fine German engineering and old world craftsmanship make this scope wonderful. Its totally different from everything else in my collection, has a whole different look, industrial and utilitarian, but at the same time sort of pop art and whimsical with the pretty red and blue accents.

The weather hasn't improved to the degree that I have been able to look through it at anything but the trees down the street. Shortly after I took the picture of the scope set up outside yesterday afternoon, the temperature dropped from the low 30s (0Cs) down into the upper 20s (~ -3C) and it clouded over. Hopefully the new telescope curse will end soon, I have to get this scope set up on Jupiter!

I know my Telementor does a wonderfully viewing Jupiter. Hope your Telementor performs the same way. I have even been thinking of mounting two of them as a binocular Telementor. I once tried that with two AR6 refractors and two Meade SN6 but soon realized I needed a stronger structure to hold such scopes. However two telementors should work just fine on a Losmandy dual saddle and a few diagonals. Will not be true binocular vission, but close enough.

I am mostly attracted to Japanese technology... but German engineering has its place Three Lakes campsite 6,500' across from the South Sister, above Sisters Oregon.

Hi Terra,

That's a very neat solution to "the rotating finder problem" ! I've used the same design to put a small MR reflex-finder on my Uni 114 -- looks and works great, without irreversible change to the OTA.

I'll show you another solution, that the previous (first) owner of my T2 came up with; The principle is basically the same as used in mounting a Zeiss 7½x42 finder to the tube, that is "clamping" the finder mount between the telecsope tube and the thread-on focuser/backend. As finder mount he used a simple off the shelf angle iron, cut out a hole with a diameter of the focuser thread on one side, and mounted a dovetail shoe on the other side, Et voilá! (see pic. -- one of the Zeiss finder too, for comparison).

The mount is roughly made by hand, but nicely finished, with felt on the tip of the screw holding the finder shoe, so it slides smothely above the tube. It actually works great.

If by chance you should decide to start a series production of Terra [T-2|Unitron] (R) adapter, write me up as a customer; I realize though that there's probably enough work on the lathe to make just one of those.

Allan

Das ist der beste 63mm fernrohr!

A Perfect achromat, all Zeiss were made to perfection as close as they possibly could get.

Love the Westie!! Actually I love Italian cars. In 34 years, had 3 Alfas, 4 Fiats, 2 Lancias, sadly no Ferraris or Lambos. Alfas are getting scarce here in the states so I defected to a BMW... Have a fondness for Swedish cars too.
I do drive a Lotus Seven replica with the heart of a Volvo 240.
I think the Zeiss T gives you insight into German engineering. Striving for perfection. Frustrated rocket scientists..

Maybe if poorly taken care of.. You own one? I have a 1999 M3 the previous owner abused this car and its still a great car.
I take it to the track, drive it VERY hard and at 104k it uses no oil and dynos 212hp at the wheels. That's more than new. Rather have to work on it a bit(do my own work.) and walk over hot coals than drive a Camry or the like.

Had a 2003 330i, dealer maintained. Would NEVER own another. Got rid of it when it blew two, count them TWO, oil seals in the same trip, with less than 60K on the clock. That was the last straw.

We return you now to our regularly scheduled thread, already in progress...

Terra, congratulation for a nice little beauty. Just couple of weeks ago I completed mine:

Telementor with Zeiss terrestrial prism

I got a lens from my friend last summer. Already the first night was wonderful, definitely one of top 3 of all my observing sessions: here. Not only DSO, also planets and Moon are fun. Here are couple of my sketches (sorry, the web page is in czech only): C63/840.

Unfortunately, due to extremely cloudy winter, I observed only one night with complete Telementor set and it was for less than one hour before another clouds came. I spent all the time on M13. Combination with TMB monocentric 16mm almost brought me to extasy. The purity and sharpness of the image was exceptional(btw, this combo gives probably the smallest practical number of glass-to-air surfaces). Then, in combination with ATC1.5x barlow (about 80x), I could glimpse first cluster members with averted vision. No sign of galaxy NGC6207 though (probably due to slight haze which is in combination with city light galaxy killer).

Nope, we had an ice storm last night, though not a bad one, and it has rained on and off and been totally cloudy and gray all day today. Nearly sunset and still no change. Maybe this weekend, however,I fear the new telescope curse has taken hold.

Hi Allen,

The rotating ring works great. I can position it however I want given the scope position and I can support any of my finders. I like that. I prefer my 9x50 straight through. Your plan B is really cool too. I'll stick with this setup though because I already have it and it works very well. Thanks for the suggestions.

Looks like a great way to mount a finder on a Zeiss.
the germans will be envious.

Hi Keith,

I see you have your Telementor mount set up as an alt-az. Do you like it that way? Does it work well? I too was contemplating that for an option.

Thank you Sasa. You have done a beautiful job putting your Telementor together. I can't wait to catch up with you in getting some time under clear and stable skies with mine. The weather thus far has not been cooperative however. Hopefully tomorrow night.

Yes, I do. I guess I was pretty good with my Etch-A-Sketch when I was kid. Adjusting altitude and azimuth is only difficult because I have many different scopes and mounts which leads to a bit of fumbling in the dark. With too many trees in my yard I need to move about to see all parts of the sky. Alt/az works. I've considered clear cutting around my house but I have a dream of moving somewhere well to the southwest of here in a few years. Having trees is said to contribute to real estate value. Better keep 'em for now.

I agree that the Telementor just feels entirely different than most of the Japanese refractors. I like the stability of the mount and tripod, leather and all.

Very easy to switch the T-mount between AZ and EQ - takes ~5.sec with the right Allen/hex wrench. I find AZ handy for casual astro - and of course terrestrial - observing.
