Where does the optical tube end - and the dew shield begin? Or is that objective recess "built-in"?

Ruled out the Telrad. It just wouldn't look right. Also the Zeiss finder is ruled out. No 400 dollar finders for me either. I think the peep site used in conjunction with a 40 mm eyepiece will be sufficient to find what I want to see. I do think I might machine an adapter that would thread to the T2 thread on the Zeiss visual back and to the Unitron Unihex on the other. That would be cool.

No dew shield. That's part of the design. The objective cell slides into the tube a distance of about 6 inches and is held in with set screws.

Magnificent scope.
Their political experiments were disasters but they certainly crafted fine machinery of all types.
Now my poor Sears classic will have an inferority complex!

Congrats with the new baby Terra !
I bought my T2 in November last year, and have been very happy with the quality and performance of the telescope.
I found it difficult to use the gunsights for faint objects, so I did at first strip on a Telrad -- which worked fine, but was a sharp pain in the lower back to look at...
I've since invested in a 7.5x42 Zeiss rotating finder plus a Zeiss H-40mm eyepiece (for my eyepiece turret), and that's a very good combination for zooming in on any object. Recommended, yes - but not cheap.
Like you, I have been contemplating a solution for attaching a unihex to the Telementor; My starting point would be to use some adapters from the Baader T-2 system, but there's no "out of the box" solution, it will require some tweaking.
On the other hand, I think I've found a straight forward solution for putting my 3" Uni OTA on the T-Mount, and using my Zeiss visual backends (EP revolver, bino and more) on the Uni-Mator. I'm working on that these days -- need to order some adapters though, to get first light.

I awakened this morning to the image in my mind's eye of Terra's photograph of her new scope. Like the Apollo lunar lander or a C8, the Telementor takes on an odd, industrial beauty by being crafted for a special purpose. One can see in its design and construction how it was meant to be reliable and durable despite handling by generations of school children. Interesting problem in engineering: Protect fine optics from the well-intended fury of so many young hands! Ten-ton tube, beefy mount, big knobs... love it! It will serve well for ages, and outlive us all. Did you see the thread about the antique Ramsden telescope from hundreds of years ago? Terra's scope will be seen similarly here on Cloudy Nights in two-hundred years!

Very nice. I have a T1 that continues to surprise me with it's views and simple, elegant engineering. As folks have said, built like a tank.
Any added goodies in those boxes?

Magnificent scope! Communism had its problems, but it's interesting to see what those societies got right. Children pretty much universally attended summer camp, which was good for their growth, despite the "Young Pioneers" programming. East German schools taught astronomy with these beautiful Telementors, although it must be said that these scopes were made by a company scavenged from the pre-War West. The country was an economic disaster, yet look at these good things they tried to do for their children. Their hearts were at least partly in the right place.
Terra, that scope is in the right place now, in your living room and under your skies.
Wars are fought by govenments; children are educated by people......that is the difference....

Hi Allan,
I haven't solved the problem of using the Unihex with the Telementor yet, that will tale some time on the lathe to make an adapter ring with the T-2 thread on one side and the Unitron thread on the other, however I did a simple little project today to make a fully rotatable finder. here is a finder ring I made from a 90mm tube ring, and some heavy adhesive backed furniture felt. I replaced the felt in the hinged tube ring with thicker self stick felt and now the ring fits the Telementor tube perfectly. Then I took a standard finder shoe, drilled and countersunk a center hole and attached the finder shoe to the tube ring. Now any of my finders, optical or red-dot can be easily attached to the Telementor.

My hunch was right when I saw the post. Yes, they are well made like a BMW telescope. One of the few scopes I would really like to own. Enjoy that scope. A guy from my home town had one, used it a few times. Looked just like yours!
You mean it has to go into the shop every month, and costs $1000 to fix?

Maybe if poorly taken care of.. You own one? I have a 1999 M3 the previous owner abused this car and its still a great car. I take it to the track, drive it VERY hard and at 104k it uses no oil and dynos 212hp at the wheels. That's more than new. Rather have to work on it a bit(do my own work.) and walk over hot coals than drive a Camry or the like.
