Saturn's ring tilt between 2011, 2012 & 2013...       #5690415 - 02/20/13 09:08 AM Attachment (96 downloads) Edit   Reply   Quote Quick Reply   Hi all - heading off hoping to get some more Saturn imaging in over the next couple of days.....forecasts look promising but I don't have any expectations and allways wait for the moment - great forecasts are "a dime a dozen" so to speak..! Anyway, we have Sam's new drivers that give an approximately 50% boost to the available framerates for many resolutions including those I've been using.....they've worked well indoors on artificial light, but as I said to Sam that with Saturn being such a dim target it will be interesting to see whether (say for 800X640 @ 50fps which we use for Saturn atm) the increase to 75fps is a bonus.....or whether the increased gain is more counter-productive..?!? Certainly hope we get the chance to see...and also (real wishing here!!! ) that we can increase f/l a tad too.....but that'll require some really nice seeing! Meanwhile I did some searching through my plethora of hard drives to extract images from the last 3 apparitions - only images that were already 3/4 processed to a reasonable similarity but I did use an image from recently which wasn't posted before.....not that it was any better/different to others I did post at the time...here they are and showing a nice comparison apropos the rings' tilt as Saturn's rings slowly open up..... This website is currently living up to its name for my locale! One question: going from 2012 to 2013, there is more red in the northern hemisphere - is that better seeing/cam/imaging/luck or do you (and others) think it a real change in the atmosphere of Saturn? Thanks fellas - appreciated! Paul - I wouldn't read very much into these images per se.....their pre-requisite was (a) finding them! (b) not needing to do too much to any of them to paste them into one image This means somewhat different processing probably as well as different capture settings and seeing conditions etc.....and I did make some small adjusting to make each image somewhat similar from an aesthetic viewpoint - as well as the new camera for the last image - and now discovering that this one was actually an r-rgb...which is a big factor! I was really only interested in displaying the ring tilt (and finding some images I could use for my long-term website plans...) As to colour variation I have seen so many renderings from within any single apparition (I'm talking professional images, but not particular wavelength imagery) and us AA'ers are another kettle of fish altogether...even if most tend to "adopt" some prevailing rendition. Which is all to say that I don't think anything can be inferred from these images regardless of what may/may not be occurring in the Saturnian atmosphere..... Forecasts are such fickle creatures - we were all set to head for one of our more remote sites but the latest updates has us now focused on our usual hangout.....might make up our minds after the next weather updates..! I've just tried the new high-speed drivers and FireCapture Build #37 this morning (yeah, I'm a bit of a Luddite in some ways! ) and apart from lots of actual imaging problems they both seemed to work fine... Stayed home because of not feeling 100% still and the forecast here was better, but we had clouds that weren't supposed to be here at home and remnants of the smoke haze (which was very bad last night) that had drifted several hundred kilometres on a South-Easterly wind from the nasty bushfires in Victoria.....I put the couple of avi's we captured down as experiments/learning experiences with the new software but I may post an image and some thoughts later on if it stands up - but I think that at the very least we learnt something, which is allways good..! I do intend to give the MC a proper run soon Graeme but even though I have been very pleased with my imaging outcomes lately they have nearly allways been hard-wrought.....from my perspective I believe others have already built up much better familiarity with the ASI120MC colour camera than I can hope to achieve in the near future but yes, it'd be nice to see an image on a good night through the C14 so I will keep it fairly high on my "must-do" agenda for the near future! I tried for Saturn this week, waking up at 3am to clouds, then back up at 4am to fair conditions, fought with my computer then found my homemade dew heater strip dead, and finally packed it in with zero video data collected. [Re: sfugardi]       #5696257 - 02/23/13 09:52 AM Edit   Reply   Quote Quick Reply   Thanks also Chris & Steve - Steve, the last couple of mornings haven't been super-productive although ! will post the best images tomorrow sometime...it's been a bit of a "smash & grab" early season Saturn situation so far for us - either only getting 1 or 2 reasonable rgb sets in or spending several hours shooting to end up with just 1 or 2 passable grabs. I'm now using the new high-speed drivers for the ASI120MM and had the opportunity to try the blackpoint/brightness control for imaging well after the sky becomes quite light - so whilst we haven't grabbed any "bar-raising" images we've learnt some more about this great camera... We captured Saturn first at 75fps and then at 113fps, the latter meant the blue channel gain was at 100% even with exposure up a tad to get a 45% histogram (the lowest I like to work with in blue on Saturn) which meant 111fps and capturing over 16500 frames.....I now feel confident that given decent seeing using these sorts of settings we stand a good chance of getting maximum imaging outcomes, despite my initial concerns over whether the increased gain needed might be counter-productive! I was trying for 30fps at f20 with my C11/Flea3 with a 60% histogram and 80% gain. Those quoted frame rates make sense for Jupiter but Saturn? You are clearly blazing new methods here! No kidding Steve! - I haven't had the seeing these last couple of morning sessions that I had around 3 weeks ago but the 113fps outcomes appear to be slightly better than the ones taken 3 hours earlier at 75fps.....this despite the fact the seeing was clearly better for the 75fps captures!
