Astronomical Photo of the Day (APOD) app (free at iTunes) features a really cool image today. Each day when the sun was 10* below horizon, a photo of Mercury was shot, and the photos were later combined, so you get a beautiful dotted arc depicting its orbital schwing against sun-kissed cloud and sky.
I would love to observe the darn thing, but it's tough in rolling hills. If there's anyone else in my predicament, this may be some small salve for your wounds.
Best, David

Thanks, Dave. I didn't realize APOD was just the app version of a NASA site.

I would love to have that many clear days close together to get that image.

The web site states " a lot of determination has been combined with a little digital manipulation to show Mercury's successive positions during March of 2000"
By that I take it there was some days of bad weather and Mercury was inserted where it should have been if the weather was clear.

Don't think so. I believe 'digital manipulation' simply refers to the individual shots of Mercury being superposed on a single background/sunset.

The weather in Spain is a bit drier than here, as well. Yesterday, I got the crescent without ever having seen the planet with the naked eye, then I tried again today and couldn't get favorable clouds. With rain the next two days, I'm done, I think. Thursday, Mercury should be above the horizon and targetable, but too dim for my 3" telescope. Friday, it won't be there at all.
