customers to shop.

We have partnered with Bongo to help expedite shipments as well as give real time shipping quotes for most everything we carry. Bongo delivers packages to your particular country 1-5 days after they receive it at their hub which usually take 3 days from our central US location.

Thank you for your time, and we hope this new service will allow you a better shopping experience with astronomics.com

Mike,

Does this service help Canadians cost wise? I've only heard of Bongo in terms of overseas or similar long distance shipping.

They work in Canada as well. I could only suggest making an "order", they quote before they charge, and seeing if it makes sense from a cost standpoint. Of course you don't need to complete the order to get the information. I would like to know your findings as I can assume you have had product shipped to you from the US. They ship by an expedited method and figure in all duty/taxes. Sometimes it is quite surprising what you find out about other countries tax code. We had a gentleman run a test on a scope to Brazil. The tax code requires all goods between $5-$3000 that arrive by plane to have a 60% tax on the value. By the time the customer placed an order a $2000 telescope had $2900 of duty and taxes due to the shipping method and the amazing amount of taxes being levied on the product. And that number did not include a shipping charge. Now I assume it could go by boat, but the expense would still be quite large.

Mike, I was curious so I put an ES1482 eyepiece in my cart with the current price of $99.99. I live in Ontario,Canada after Bongo processed it the total came to $195. $68 of which was shipping and the rest tax duty and processing. When I get something via USPS the only thing I pay is 13% GST + $5 and that is if they even catch it before it gets to my mailbox which they often don't.
I don't really need the eyepiece now it is just something I may get in the future to be paired with one I have now for binoviewing.
Just thought I would let you know as it seems that there may be a few kinks in the new system.

Eric

I did the same comparison by copying a shipment I had previously. ~$240 shipment had $88 shipping and $62 duty taxes. There is no duty on astronomical gear, and taxes for me is 15% or $37. I received this shipment last year for cost + USPS shipping of $45, paid tax at the post office, and the shipping time was under 7 days.

Thanks for the info. We will start going through their bugs. I have never heard of no duty on astronomical gear. I will need to look into that as well.

Mike, The main thing when shipping to Canada is to avoid brokerage fees. USPS is the way to go in this regard, and I might add, it is a very reliable service. If it is not delivered directly to your mailbox, you pay the (already known in advance for every province) taxes when you pick it up and there are no surpises.

Nooo, but my madness does exist as the $50 would likely end up in your till eventually.

Mike,
Just tested the Bongo thing.
I "Mock ordered" an iOPTRON SmartEQ Mount with Retail value of $399.00 to Israel.
Results were as follows:
$399.00 Item cost
$188.69 Shipping
$199.81 Tax/Duty/Handling

787.50 Total

Well, First, In Israel there is no duty on Telecope accessories (including Mounts), the only thing there is, is VAT at 17% on cost + shipping (in the present case should have amounted to $99.00 for VAT).

This is rather expensive (Paying almost 100% of the items value on shipping Tax and Handling.

If you Ship USPS I save at least $100 on Bongo's Handling fees.
Can you tell me how much I would Pay Shiping the iOPTRON Mount through USPS International Air Priority Mail?

P.S. - I am seriously interested in the iOPTRON SmartEQ PRO (with autoguider capability) but I dont see it on your website. Do you or will you have it in stock in the near future ?

The mount is on the way with some other iOptron pieces this week. I will see what is going on with Bongo. At this point the promise of service is not even close to what was stated. I can only hope there is an issue with the initial setup and this is not how they operate.

Thanks for checking up on them.
I's a good idea, maybe just teething problems

THe Bongo experiment is now over as it doesn't fulfill the needs of the seller or the buyer.

You may wish to find out who EddieBauer.com use to service Canada. It is rather seamless and they use USPS and Canadapost.

Us folks in Singapore use a couple of outfits in Portland - VPost.com.sg and comgateway.com - which does what Bongo does, except only TO Singapore.

The costs are significantly less than this Bongo deal. Shipping a Mach1 cost me about $400.
