Tel, Thanks to the link to the article on the altitude clutch. Mine seems to be holding the extra front end weight just fine. Fine tuned anti-backlash too. Now if only I can get clear skies to test it out. Unfortunately here in south Louisiana the forecast is clouds and rain for the next 2 weeks! Thanks again, Joe

Hi Joe,
Glad to hear all adjustments seem to have gone OK.
You can of course test the 'scopes' smoothness of operation to a certain extent while waiting for the clouds to clear, by artificially programming the 'scope, "in the comfort of your own home", by literally kidding it into an alignment and then making some pracice slews to this and that called-up object just to see that all is tight and functioning.
Best regards, Tel
BTW. Don't forget though, to let us know how it goes when you do get a break in the clouds and are able to get outside for real ! !
Best regards, Tel

Camera is a Canon 1D Mark IV (since discontinued). I originally got it for its speed for bird photography. When I first started practicing alignment and tracking with my new 8SE, i tried some piggyback shots with it first. M31 below was shot with the Canon 1D Mark IV, zoom lens at 280mm F4.0, 1250 ISO, piggyback on 8SE, 30 sec exposures, 50 light frames, 25 darks, flats, flat darks, bias, DSS then PS.

Wow, awesome shot of M31!
If you don't mind me asking (sorry if this is a complete newbie question, still getting the hang of things), how did you get such a wide FOV with your 8SE? Was it just because of the camera settings you mentioned, or is there something else helping you with FOV?
Excellent shots!!!

This was only using the 8SE for tracking. This is shot through my camera lens at 280mm piggybacked on top of the 8SE tube.
So, I guess, that photo may be a little out of place for this thread. Sorry for the confusion!

As a AP newbie, I sure picked a tough subject for my second DSO, but I've always been fascinated with the Crab Nebula. Stock 8SE, 6.3FR, 20 sec exposures, 1600 ISO, 140 lights, 80 darks, 10 bias, 10 flat, 10 dark flat, DSS, PS3.

Joe Nice shot! I think that there is a lot more detail in that shot that could be enhanced with careful processing. You caught a good one. BE Well Grey

Nice imaging, Joe !
As Grey says though, there is more detail contained within this one, as perhaps this attempt to bring it out, shows ?
Best regards, Tel

Wow, do I have a lot to learn! Everything I tried to bring out the filaments just increased noise. What's even more amazing, Tel, is that you did that working with a small jpeg file!

One of the coolest things about this forum is when Tel remixes a picture. It speaks to the reason we all love astronomy, to see more of what is out there.

Many thanks guys for your kind comments but conversely, I feel privileged that you gents allow me to "mess" with these fine images of yours.
(Of course there's always the ulterior motive: namely that it provides me with an occasional opportunity to practise my P/Shop et al processing, which is about all I'm doing these days given that we've endured weeks of practically solid cloud cover here in the UK) !
Once again, many thanks and best regards, Tel

That's an excellent effort Joe, considering this is your first time. Btw to answer your question about 'topic', as long as you are using Nexstar equipment, it counts. Shows the versatility of this fine instrument.
Nice James, quite sharp. The Neximage does really well on the Moon doesn't it? You should try a mosaic next time, though painful and time consuming, well worth in the end. I tried once but just didn't have the patience to complete.

My first attempt (sort of). Target is (was) the double cluster in Perseus (Caldwell 14). Nexstar 8SE; initial alignment to Polaris, Betelgeuse, Aldebaran; then, removed diagonal/eyepiece/visual back, and screwed in a f6.3 reducer/T-adaptor/T-ring to a Canon 1100D (unmodified). Focused with a homemade mask and liveview on Betelgeuse; then, slewed to Jupiter to verify alignment. Then, went to Caldwell 14. Took 40 shots at ISO 400, 30 seconds each; 10 dark frames; no flat frames; no bias. Processed in Deep Sky Stacker 3.3 beta for stacking; minimal adjustment of RGBK in DSS; exported to 16bit TIF for PS/Elements; minimal adjustment of contrast in PS/Elements; finally converted to JPEG with IrfanView. I'm not at all unhappy with this for a first attempt!
