Well I've been eyeing the Edge series scopes for quite some time now. So this past Wednesday evening I called Astronomics and order the 8in version . With any luck it should arrive tomorrow, even though tracking shows Tuesday. I would prefer tomorrow as it's supposed to be clear. And next weeks forecast is not looking great. I can't wait to get this scope under the stars and eventually take some pictures with it. I'll probably go the focal reducer route rather than fastar as of now.
I'm pretty new to SCT's. This is my second one, but my first with a good mount to mate it to. So I have a couple questions.
It comes with a 1.25in visual back, however I have a WO 2in dielectric diagonal that has a portion that uncrews from the body. I wonder if it will screw on to the back of the Edge either with the unscrewed portion or the diagonal portion?
I also have this which I bought for some unknown reason a couple years back. It looks to be a 2in visual back. Would it be better to use this + the diagonal, or just the diagonal if it works? How much would the visual back + diagonal increase the focal length (The visual back is nearly 3in's long)?
Next question. Is it possible to use the included finder scope as a guide scope? I'm using an Orion SSAG
Thanks!

I'm not sure if the WO diagonal threads are 2" SCT threads, but I suspect not. It may be difficult to thread on even if the threads mated because of the focuser knob.
I purchased my first Baader Clicklock 2" SCT Visual Back a few months ago and can only rave about it. It will work very well to hold your WO diagonal. The vb you referenced will probably work, but it won't give you a warm fuzzy with the 2" diagonal and a 2" eyepiece. You'll need to be careful how you position the eyepiece or the diagonal could slip around and end up on the ground (I've done it).

Will do. No update from Fedex, so it looks like it will be arriving Monday or Tuesday. If it arrives Monday or Tuesday the best chance for first light will be the following Sunday.

Another new scope?
Your an equipment junkie Zach....
Congratulations! I have always thought that a good C8 is a great all around scope that is capable of doing many things very well.
I have an older model C8 OTA that I use all the time.
It cools fairly quickly and has plenty of resolution on the planets and enough light grasp to see thousands of deep sky objects.
Steve
P.S. Make yourself a dew shield. I'd recommend one about 12 inches long.

Steve, This makes the 20th scope I've owned since 2005. I think I have a problem. I wanted the 11hd but couldn't swing it, so the 8 it was. I imagine it will be a great scope. I plan on going to the local fabrics store to get the materials to make a dew shield. I wonder how long the 8HD will take to cool down going from 20 C to 2 C?

Congratulations on the great new 8HD! I hope you escape the cloudy weather curse.
Regarding the Baader Planetarium 2" Clicklock Clamp for SCT (2" Thread) CLSC-2 -- just a note, although the ad says it's just for the sct scopes, I have this exact 2" clicklock and it came attached to my 2" Baader solar wedge. So if anyone else has this wedge you can easily remove it and use it on your sct. It works great! Clear Skies to you. ---Maya

I'm just curious, how come you keep buying so many scopes?
I have lots of them but I use them for different applications. I had/have a friend that has had 40 something scopes in the last 10 years or so, and for a long time, would just buy a scope, take some pics of himself next to it, then pretty much say the same thing about each of them cuz he really never used them, then sold it, bought another one etc. 40 some odd scopes later, hes the King of the equipment forums (in his own mind) for owning so many scopes, but you get him in the dark and he cant find the Polaris.
I know, its very awkward and strange. VERY STRANGE!!
Just curious, if you've used them before selling them.

Sometimes you have to try different scopes until you find a couple of scopes that really fit your personal requirements. But your right 40 scopes in ten years, and not knowing the night sky is a little strange. Although I don't believe that Zach fits into this category.

Hey Zach...you actually had the nerve to count your past and present scopes? I avoid that! Nice scope! I just put an 11" Edge in my obs about a month ago. Nice piece of hardware.

Maya- thanks! Yes hopefully they clouds go away soon.
Ralph- I just enjoy telescopes. And I've been given the opportunity in life to use and observe with a bunch of scopes. For me using different scopes helps me learn the sky. Also I'm trying to find the right combo of scopes. I'm close now, but there are still other scopes Id like to own.
Steve- spot on with your assessment.
David- yeah probably not the best idea to count all my scopes. I've heard great things about the Edge scopes, so I'm really excited to get this new scope under some sky.

I'm not familiar with the WO diagonal. Some diagonals come with a SCT back adaptor. But whether it did or not, the adaptor you have should do the trick nicely. You will probably find you can take off the first half of that adaptor and use just the other half.
As for the finder scope, most don't have a 1 1/4" eyepiece you would need for the guider. It looks to be the same model as came with my C6-RGT and if that is the case will not work.

FedEx is really slacking. It's supposed to be clear tonight, but my scope doesn't arrive until tomorrow. Oh well, good things come to those who wait.

If I can't use the finder scope as a guide I can use my Stellarvue 80/9D.
I have a couple questions though: Is this the kit from ADM I need to get to mount my 80/9D atop my mount?
More importantly is the 80/9D to long of a scope, 30" with focuser racked in, to use atop of the Edge 8? Would it better to find a smaller scope or can I used the 80/9D?
Thanks!

I look forward to your impressions.
The EdgeHD 8" I have has the best optics I have ever had in an SCT.
But it is much more than that. The outstanding off axis performance makes it on par with my 6" APO for general observing. The field is amazingly sharp all the way to the edge of the widest field eyepeices I own.
I no longer use my 6" APO for most general observing unless I have a night where I want to look at wide fields.
IF it fits into the field of the EdgeHD 8" I prefer to use it. Just as sharp, brighter, and a heck of a lot easier to get out of the door.
Everyone should own a C8, but if they can swing the extra dollars, they should make it an EdgeHD 8".
I spent far more money on smaller scopes over the years and have not enjoyed them as much.
Wonderful scope. I can't imagine that you won't be pleased.
Again, looking forward to your impressions.
