The diagonal is a Williams Optic dielectric with an active cooling fan installed,,,see the intake vents at the front of the OTA. The 80mm finder gives me the ability to see larger clusters and browse star-fields along with the ability to find fainter DSO'S than the 50mm finder allows. The wide angle views complement the sct beautifully. bc

Very nice setup! I like the idea of the active cooling and the 80mm finder.

never had a motofocus, but the feather-touch works great. One less motorized item as well. The item that contributed most to focusing and image stability was the heavy duty tripod. Well worth the investment.

Latest iteration with an Antares 80mm finder added. Surprisingly still tracks fine.
That's a really nice setup you have there. It really shows the possibilities of how far you can push the basic 8SE.
Could you please post a close-up image and/or explanation of how you've attached the 50mm finder to the inboard side. It looks good there and I like how it moves some weight to the other side of the arm.
Cheers Jim

Here's a nice device from ADM, a saddle block. It attaches to the rail and can be used for small scopes and cameras. It also helps the balance situation and puts the extra weight to the left of the AL bearing.

My Nexstar has been sitting in my office since last summer, which is why I haven't posted in a long time. (I love the scope but I really hate the cold.) I read the forum daily and am still very thankful to everyone who tried to help with the scope's retrograde slewing problem last year. In the end, a new mount was the solution. But it's still February and another snowstorm is on the way. Summer seems a long way off.

My new William Optics 2" diagonal arrived yesterday, so now the Nexstar can wait for warm weather with a little more pride in its tilt.

After my last observing session, with Skywire. I stopped after 3 hours because of a backlash problem I need to fix in altitude.

Thanks. On the tripod you can see the Skywire, connected on an iPhone or iPod (I use both) that is hidden behind the arm.

When I retired about ten years ago I bought a Nexstar 5i. I subsequently had it Supercharged by Dr. Sherrod following a collimation debacle. It was an outstanding scope -- great optics and dead-on go-to. I only sold it because I couldn't resist getting the 8SE. I often wish I hadn't -- the 5i was a keeper even if I had no reason to keep it.

Ed,
I currently have a 6SE OTA and C8 Ultima OTA. My 6 is so perfect and clear and my 8 is not so clear and perfect. The guy I bought the 8 from said it needed to be collimated. I have not collimated a SCT before so I am sort of procrastinating. I am hoping to find a simple way to collimate it. But anyway I am holding on to this 6SE until I make sure the 8 is worth keeping. Also this is my second C8 / 8SE and the first one had similar views even when cooled down.
