Filament size, Aug 6, 2012 wins

Thought I would compare the size of the large filament from last week to the Aug. 6, 2012 monster filament. The August filament wins by over 100,000 km.

Hi Ray

How accurately did you correct for the curvature of the Sun?

The August one was certainly more explosive here it was at almost the same aspect as the 18 February one

Andy

Hi Andy,
I do say approximate. I only claculate the length of the line that I draw, do not make account for the curves nor the curvature of the sun etc...
That is a beautiful movie of Aug. 4th, lots of movement.
Ray

That's cool Ray!

Andy, how much time does that animation portray of that filament? That is an amazing video!

Hi Warren the video runs from 12:18UT to 13:27UT on 4 August 2012 and I used my PST at 0.8m focal length.

Ray, I was inspired by your stunning photos and so I did some internet research to see if any one had put anything together on a simple method of how to estimate the length of solar filaments and came up with nothing?

I have an idea of putting something together as a draft document and then posting it on this forum to invite comments. Can I use your two excellent full disc photographs posted above as a basis for this document and I shall certainly credit them to you.

Regards

Andy

Here is a very interesting site where I picked up some of my information from Guy Buhry https://sites.google.com/site/astroblue1/astronomie/brico-utiles
Attached is the very useful solar ruler from Guy Buhry.

Did not come out very well, but the original version is downloadable from his site.

Hi Ray, I am working with Guy and putting something together. Is there any chance you could post the two photos from above separately and without the distance arrow included?

Regards

Andy
