DSL speed test

What is your favorite DSL speed test web site...

Apparently my speed should be 6 Mbps however the best download speed is typically around 1 Mbps...

I like speedtest.net, as it has a mobile Android app as well as a service my Windoze computers can access for consistency.

Thanks Marcus,

At least I now know the speed test is valid!!

The DSL service man will be checking out my connection speed tomorrow!

I'm not sure what the guy can do to boost the speed...

At the moment I have selected (WPA) over the default (WPA2) not sure if this can alter the speed..

I've always used "speedtest.net" .... it was highly recommended by the technician who set up my cable internet connection. Interestingly, I get a consistent download speed of 25Mbps and upload of 1.9Mbps when using Mozilla Firefox and a download speed of 34Mbps and 1.9Mbps upload using Google Chrome. I guess it does make a difference which browser you use!

With whatever test site you use pay close attention to the host it's using. Distance obviously can make a big difference as can time of day (congestion). The best speed results come when you run the tests multiple times at various times of the day. Just like imaging, more data is better.

I retested this morning and my top download speed was 3.50 Mbps

But the upload speed was only .31 Mbps ...

(This test was on the wireless laptop)

I will try the hardwired laptop next.

Last night about midnight the download speed dropped to .2 Mbps

Maybe the phone company was performing maintenance on their system.

Retested download speed with the hardwired laptop and download speed was 3.22 Mbps. The upload speed was .33 Mbps.

And this is my local phone company 6 Mbps (Max) Internet package...

Of course they SAY Max..

Thanks for the feed back...

The following web site gives me various results..

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

The Chicago test gives the best results with 3.72 Mbps download and a .33 Mbps upload.

Just a note, on the average, the upload speed can be anywhere from 8% - 11% of your download speed. I work for a dsl company and that is pretty much industry standard unless you have a business account and then they be more.

My download & upload speeds are consistent once my computers are set up, but all bets are off until then. If I pull out my desktop to plug in a USB peripheral, my download speeds can double or triple. If I twist the orientation of the antenna on my mini-PC, my download speeds can drop to 1% of optimum.

I'm paying for up to 12 Mbps download speed, and usually get 11.4 Mbps.

I never tested mine before, I just ran the www.speedtest.net from Firefox and it says 28.62 Mbps Download and 1.95 Mbps Upload. That seems pretty good I guess. I have a basic cable modem with ethernet wire connection.

I believe Cable modem will be faster than the phone line modem.

I went with the package deal for 3 years...

$27.99 Phone/caller ID/call waiting

$19.99 DSL

Total, $47.98/month plus taxes

Bad news is that I pay around $65 for nothing but internet access.

My download was advertised as 100Mbps......only getting 92Mbps according to speedtest. Upload was even worse at 82Mbps.

Did not sem to matter what browser.

Oh we'll, at least it is faster than systems in California and Arizona. Wow, that was painful. Worse thing about being a snowbird!!!

Any info, though, on the relative merits of these speed test sites? Or what the ISPs are doing to ensure good results?!!

I've heard that the ISPs now provide a speed boost when those sites are accessed so as to inflate their results.

Plus, you'll also see that the testing site often connects to another site that belongs to your ISP which does raise a question or two.

Hence, looking for independent sites that screen temporary power boosts and do longer tests.
