The Setup for quick views new
      #5692308 - 02/21/13 07:52 AM Attachment (81 downloads)

Super portable Questar Seven in it's table top leg configuration allows me to use the Seven as quick as the 3 1/2 but with a little more muscle to lift it...other than that it is the best way to be Polar aligned and observing in no time.

Couldn't agree more.

Here's the Q7 I used to have

Used to have? What year was the one in the photo? When did you sell it? Miss having it? I just sent mine back to Q for a Full Service....should come back as new like they did on my 3 1/2. I couldn't believe it was the same Questar that I sent them...looked brand new! They do an amazing job there.

Had I lived in the US, I would have sent mine to Q as well for a full service. But insured shipping one-way for just the OTA in it's case was roughly US$ 1000 IIRC. In the end I decided to move a big step up in aperture. Got the 16" f/5 and sold the 1985 Q7. The Q7 still has a special place in my heart, as have all the wonderful Questar people. There may be another Q in my future someday.
The picture of my Q7 was taken in my backyard in 2010.

I'd love to have a Q7, but whenever I see the tabletop legs set up, it looks like they're bending under the weight.

Hi Steve,

No worries about bending. The Q7 tabletop legs are exceedingly solid and rigid. They would easily carry much more weight.

Steve,

Mine do not bend or flex. Eric is correct. Questar always over designs their products.

The Q7 is much more over-dimensioned than the Q 3 1/2. The Q7 feels and performs like a professional high-end instrument. If anyone likes a Q 3 1/2, I am sure they will love the Q7. As a consequence of it's size and construction, the Q7 is also MUCH heavier and bulkier than the Q 3 1/2. It takes quite a bit of muscle to move around in it's tabletop configuration. Kind of like a 4" APO on a solid German Equatorial, but in a much smaller package!

If anyone wants a Q7, buy one. They will not be made forever.

I couldn't agree more! Yes it is MUCH heavier and bulkier than the 3 1/2 but once you set it up in it's table top configuration it is just amazing!!! This is becoming my quick Grab n Go Questar. Amazing the way way it was designed! Obviously learned from the worlds best telescope in the world...The Questar 3 1/2.
