Second light - Now this was cool!

Last evening I had the Orion out for her maiden voyage and did some early evening lunar viewing.

This evening I got the scope out set up for full moon rise. Out to the west the sun had set about 20 minutes prior. I see what looks to be a funny flying comet or something so I spin the scope around and take a look.

It was contrails from jets! And I could even see the burning of the engines and in some cases (depending on the angle of the plane) I could make out wings and nose.

The boys and I had a blast as we were able to pick out about 5 different jets. It was worth the effort.

BTW- we watched the moon rise for about 10 minutes before it went behind clouds. Hope to see some more later this evening.

Like a child in a candy store - so are the days of our lives. Enjoy your scope.

I'm starting to pay more attention during dusk.... the sun illuminates a lot of NEO stuff.

I have a correct-image diagonal on the way.... then the real fun will begin!

I sure hope they were military jets using their afterburners and not commercial passenger jets!!

Not sure... Does the military use strobes on the tips of their wings?
