Comet Lemmon very fine in southern skies new
      #5691364 - 02/20/13 05:19 PM

Comet Lemmon is a very pleasing object for S Hemisphere observers. Currenly it's 10 from the SMC and moving several degrees through Tucanae on its way to N Hemi observers. Much brighter and larger than expected only marginally smaller in dia and about the same brightness 47 Tucanae. Indeed, defocus 47 Tuc a bit and the two are near-twins. Too much moon (77%) to see it visually, but spotted it easily in 15x70 binocs last night (Feb 19), tracked it for an hour in a 180mm f/10 Mak in between clouds & mediocre 2 out of 5 transparency. Tonight in post-cold front breezy but clear 4/5 skies, it's outstanding in a 200mm Mak f/12 from 80x up to 300x, and unmistakeably cometary in a 100mm f/6 achro at 28x despite the tail being much washed-out by the moon. It's in the fast lane part of its passage. Its position changed noticeably against a field of 5th to 8th mag stars within 5 mins at 225x. The halo brightens evenly to a bright tiny core about the same brightness as 47 Tuc's core. The tail is better in binocs, but still pretty tepid compared with that core. It's much brighter than Gerradd two years ago and Lulin several years back. The Aussie IceInSpace thread has a lot more on it. I hope Lemmon can hang on to some of its dust & outgas long enough to put on a show like this when it looms for you folks in northern hemi skies April.

You guys down there have had good luck in recent years. Our PanStarrs is not looking at good as it was supposed to be - but I am still holding out hope. Not long now! Send us Lemmon in good shape. GW

WeltevredenKaroo,

Thanks for the report--you folks in the land of Oz have been fortunate with comets. How does Comet Lemmon compare to the recent Comet McNaught?

This video was posted on Spaceweather today and gives the rest of us a visual of what you're witnessing.
