It was a beautiful night to observe: a transparant sky with good seeing and a Moon high in the sky. I had no difficulties to see in my little refractor (parts of) 3 rimae! With a slight different lightning (and a bigger scope) there should be more of those scratches visible.

Jef,
It looks great. Nice sketching work. It seems you are using more gray shades than you have in the past. Is that a fair assessment? A 3" refractor is plenty of scope for sketching the Moon.

Thanks all for the nice comments! I think this sketch must be one of my best lunar work.

It seems you are using more gray shades than you have in the past.
I started sketching the Moon with a white pencil (a little bit harder than a pastel pencil) but found it difficult to create the right gray scale. Now I work with different pastel pencils and it makes for me the Moon much more easy to sketch: Conté pastel 1355 n° 13 (white), n° 20 (light gray), n°33 (gray) and n°42 (dark gray). For black I use no pastel but a Conté Pierre Noire 1710 HB.

Jef,
Nice clean refined work once again. You DO have a very successful style Jef - it conveys the experience rewardingly for other moon observers.

I'm no artist at all and never practice at home... So the most important reason for my progress in moonsketching is: material! I can warmly advise the use of different white/gray pastels instead of only one white pastel pencil.
