How to balance in DEC axis?
      #5708635 - 03/02/13 11:45 AM

I find it fairly easy to adjust counterweights and find balance in RA axis. How can I best balance my OTA in DEC? I am using a CGEM 8HD with guidescope package, DSLR and auto guider.

I can't slide the OTA any further up the dovetail plate to better balance the scope in DEC. Help!

AMDizack,

You'll need a longer dovetail or you'll need to use a counterweight system on your scope. I have a very similar problem with my newt when the camera is on my ED80 stacked on top. I have to push the tube nearly to the end of the dovetail to get balance. One thing you could try moving your 80mm guidescope farther towards the nose of your SCT if you can.

So, longer dovetail or a counterweight system to make your mount nose heavy is really what you want.

I had the same problems with my tiny C6 on the CG5. I taped some lead fishing weights to the end of the tube until the balance was equal.

EDIT: Also the weights that are used to balance a car tire can either clamp onto metal or have an adhesive back and are rounded in shape. Should work fairly well for the front of the tube I'm guessing.

For a smaller imbalanced, to to ScopeStuff and pick up one of their small counterwieghts here: http://scopestuff.com/ss_baln1.htm. These are threaded and can be attached to the hole near the end of the dovetail that is used for the emergency stop. These put more weight up near the front of the scope to counter the tail heavy nature of the SCT. For a larger imbalance another option is one of the aftermarket balance kits that attach to the underside of the dovetail.

Ed

Does the dovetail of an Edge 8" have this threaded hole for the emergency stop?

Mine does but it is a D-series wide dovetail. I haven't had a V-Series stock dovetail in quite a while so will have to check that. The hole needs to be a 1/4-20 to work with the ScopeStuff wieghts.
