I'm in the planning stages of building a dob structure for my 16" Swayze mirror. I’m thinking of going ultra light along the lines of the Obsession UC or Albert Highe's design. I want to have the ability to add digital setting circles but for the life of me can't see how the alt axis is going to work (Az is a no brainer). Anyone out there got a picture of how it’s done?

Check out my website at dobstuff.com and look at the scopes and testimonials page. You'll note the alt bearings are made with a "center hole" -- this is where the encoders would be attached. I like to use the Sky Commander encoder installation kit for the pivots -- but there are other solutions as well. Dennis

If the altitide bearings don't have a place where you can mount the encoder at the center of rotation, you can make a bracket, or have someone at a machine or welding shop make one for you.

Sure, anything that'll put the encoder into the center of the alt bearing "circle" will work fine.

Thank you all for your responses. I see now that with an ultra light design one needs to have a bracket that extends from the rocker base to the where the center of the alt axis would be. This becomes the “virtual” location to place the alt encoder.

Or you can skip that part and use this
Works great on my 12.5 inch version.

Very cool. I've seen some folk use an iPad taped onto the OTA. Probably same mechanics in play.
