So is this good for us?
The plan to shut them off between 11pm and 5am certainly sounds like a big plus. I've been wondering if there are smart highway systems in our future that will turn lights on and off at will as traffic passes through.

It is a good sign particularly for rural areas. The impacts of nighttime lightning for wildlife corridors areas can be significant.
WASH DOT is not the most innovative or imaginative highway department. You really can see it in their designs! At least they are aware which is a great steo forward.

There are such systems and this new one in Washington sounds like it is of that type.
With “smart” lighting design, a computer monitors traffic and sets the light brightness to the current traffic level and weather conditions. It is possible for it to be “no traffic = no light”, but of course that is up to the owner of the system, and of course local law.

Late night dimming is certainly a great thing and it will be very important to see this idea spread.
