The UK is really going for dark sky protection in the last remaining pockets and we now have Galloway Forest in Scotland ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2008/dec/23/astronomy-galloway-dark-sky-park ), Breacon Beacons in Wales ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-21496562 ), Exmoor Dark Sky Reserve in SW England ( http://www.exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk/environment/landscape/dark-skies ) and Sark as a Dark Sky Island in the Channel Islands just off France ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/jan/31/sark-first-dark-sky-island )
Hopefully light pollution within these boundaries is kept in check. I assume the IDA maintain checks and can revoke the status if LP gets out of hand?
What is changing in the UK is astronomy is now seen as cool by large segments of the population. The BBC are helping with the annual 3 day "Star Gazing Live" each January which gets big audiences - 3 series so far - and it helps to have Prof Brian Cox and Dara O Briain as the presenters. Of course the other factor off the back of this is astro tourism is boosting the parks profiles.
A factor for the Northumberland darksky tourism aspect is the presence of the Kielder Observatory

Thanks for your post; this certainly is very encouraging! Places such as this, brings the LP problem to the attention of many more people.
Wish more places would do this.

If too many get the status I can see the Baker Street Irregulular Astronomers who meet in Regents Park in central London applying for it. 
More worrying is they may succeed.

Regents Park can certainly apply but they will have to get London to turn the lights off first
