CG-5 Pedestal mount source
      #5716271 - 03/06/13 12:07 PM

I used to have a pedestal mount, which I quite liked, for my CG-5 (and before that Super Polaris). Circumstances changed and I found I didn't need it for a few years so I sold it. A few more years pass and I could use it again and regret selling it. It was an Antares pedestal, so I went back to them for it and, lo and behold, they have discontinued it.

Are there any other sources for a pedestal mount for the CG-5? Googling doesn't turn up anything obvious.

Thanks.

Paul,

If you're talking about a pier extension, I use the Orion on my CG-5.

Nah, I think he means the full pedestals like this one:

Sadly they've been discontinued. I have 48" and 60" versions. IMO, they are a little underbuilt and I suspect that you could work with a machinist to come up with a much sturdier pier assembly. Alternately you could buy and Astro-Physics pier and then work with a machinist to develop a top plate for your mount head.

Good luck,

Jim

I do mean the pedestal in Jim's photo. I agree they are a little underbuilt but I wouldn't be asking much of it. I just like the idea of leaving them out (covered by tarp) more than my wood tripod.

Having read a bit more last night, I think I'm going to bite the bullet and just sink a pier in the backyard. It's overkill for what I am looking for and given the various trees, houses and other hazards I will miss not being able to move about but I think it is probably the best solution.

Go to the home page of Ken's site. He closed for business in April of 2012. No longer taking orders.

Best, Linda B.
