Dragged out my scope, let it cool with the fan for 1 hr / 45 min, and grabbed a view of Jupiter. The sky was clear, but a bit "hazy" and of course the full moon washed pretty much every deep sky object out of the sky, so nothing in the form of deep sky was seen.
It was just about an hour's observation with my 5mm Vixen LVW, nothing more. The lower & lower it got, the more "yellow" it looked as it creeped towards the ground, lol.

I get lots of that hazy in the winter too. Cuts down on transparency. I just came in from looking at Jupiter - the GRS was front and center. Lots of turbulence in the SEB trailing the spot. I also noted a bit of color variation inside the GRS. I was using a 5mm eyepiece for 250x magnification. Always good to look at the king

We are fortunate right now because if you can schedule it, both Jupiter and Saturn are excellent targets. Jupiter is still close enough to show lots and Saturn is looking amazing with rings in good presentation. I indentified 5 of 6 available moons of Saturn yesterday morning including 11.8 mag Iapetus which was blinking in and out of view.

GRS front and center 9pm CST tonight (5th). Got a scope chillin' in the yard as we speak. Last week in good conditions I was able to make out a lot of the turbulence in the wake of the GRS - really amazing to see.

Markus,
Great sketch of Jupiter. The dark festoon bases on the NEBs are prominent.
Thanks for posting. Dean

I took out my scope last night first time in almost 8 months & was very happy to go to bed after viewing Jupiter & I think what were 6 of its moons. First time I observed Jupiter!

My 'last night' with Jupiter was 3/28/13. At 7:52p.m., the sun set. At 7:53p.m., I observed Europa pop out from behind Jupiter's shadow. Wow oh wow! Was that neat.
Check out 'Phenomena of Jupiter's Moons' in Sky and Telescope. Jupiter isn't just a bright object anymore for this astronomer.

very cool jupiter sketch, in the future, when you sketch, don't draw lines for the bands then color them in, just draw the bands, use a blending stub to get the right texture in the bands, use an eraser shield to pinpoint details, try to read the book "Astronomical Sketching by Handy,Moody Perez, Rix and Sol Robbins, they have tons of advice look at the sketching forum to get ideas, you have done a great job on this sketch learning a few tricks of the trade will produce a masterpiece for you

Actually I *can* draw, but in the cold I don't stay out too long and I don't really take my time drawing at the eyepiece because I like to hop around and see more stuff!
Good call on the lines and the bands tho....next time I'll just smudge, lol.
That drawing took me about 5 minutes.
Another thing: I have no tracking with my dob.....If I did i would spend hours drawing at the eyepiece..."nudge nudge nudge" LOL !!!!
"SMUDGE & NUDGE" hahaha !!!!
Cheers,

Sketching is a great way to improve your eye for detail at the eyepiece, some folks make a rough sketch at the scope then make a more detailed sketch from the warmth and comfort of their home, sketching with a dob can be frustrating though some folks are quite good at it, clear skies to you.
