It’s nearly time for my monthly naked-eye New Moon spotting challenge, which becomes relatively easy for observers north of the tropics as we near the vernal equinox. Many North Americans should be able to sight the little more than one-day-old Moon on March 12th when it will appear as a Lunar Boat, i.e. a U-shaped Moon. Some observers may set personal records. My more detailed article describing the waxing crescent Moon’s first appearance of the coming lunar month appears under the links for my preview graphics at www.CurtRenz.com/moon
Photos and descriptions of the young Moon would be welcome additions to this thread. Please include your location, date, time and time zone.
Here is link to a photo that I took from Arlington Heights, Illinois of a Lunar Boat aged 1.35 days on 2009 MAR 27 at 19:53 CDT: http://www.curtrenz.com/NM090327.jpg

You're welcome, rookie. Good Luck!
Meanwhile, I've been reminded that comet C/2011 L4 (Pan-STARRS) will appear in the vicinity of the young Moon, so the comet has been added to my three March New Moon spotting charts.

Moon spotted at 7:07 PM CDT, 3 minutes after local sunset.
VMA shows lunation of 1.18 days and 1.6% illuminated. This beats my previous New Moon spotting record of 1.65 days on Feb 11 by almost 12 hours!.

I found it with 20x80 binoculars at 00:40 minutes UT. It was peeking in and out of cloud banks but this viewing at 1.2 days (Virtual Moon)is the youngest I can find in my records. CLear skies and clean glass, Mike

Congratulations on your record, Mike. From here in Chicagoland, all I can see in the sky is a multitude of crystals of frozen water packed into small white clumps.

Thanks, I kept looking and looking for the new moon and finally spotted it. Started taking some shots and then after it got dark enough the little fellow showed up!

Going out for the comet, I spotted the Moon on 12 March at around 18:20 UT so about 22,5 hours old.
