Ive read that alot of the cables to hook the LX200 to a computer via USB just plain dont work. Can anyone recommend one that will?

One based on the FTDI chips are best.

Second place goes to Prolific chips.

Anything from China goes to last place.

I hope this helps.

The Keyspan units have always worked well for me. I see them recommended all the time.

Whichever one you get, make triple-sure to install the correct drivers for your OS!

DO NOT install WinXP drivers on Win7!

+1 ... I've used a Keyspan USB-to-Serial adapter for many years on my 12" LX200 "Classic" ... without any problems. I've also used it for other computer equipment connections without ever experiencing any problems. It's the best adapter available ... IMHO.

I agree about the FTDI but not the Prolific, I've got one (a real one, not a Chinese copy) and it will work in some circumstances but not others. It's sensitive to the length of the RS232 cable, the USB connection and the application.
FTDI or Edgeport for me, people say good things about Keyspan but I've never tried one.

Chris

I just ordered one above as well. I had been using one from Staples and while it worked, it was not reliable. It often got a COM port error for no reason.

Belkin had worked just fine until I upgraded to the latest Ascom (v6 sp1). Several recommendations from the Ascom forum included those mentioned above.
I switched to Keyspan and all was back to normal.
