My 14.5" Astro Sky is almost ready to be shipped!! new
      #5717438 - 03/06/13 10:37 PM

Hello all,

I am extremely excited (and have to tell someone!) as I have been told by James at Astro Sky that my 14.5” scope will soon be totally completed (the sky commander install/testing is all that is left) and will ship either Monday or Tuesday next week. Talk about ecstatic!

James has been sending me continuous updates, pictures and videos about my scope build since day one. What a great way to see your scope come to exist. Like many here on Cloudy Nights I agonized and researched about who would get my hard earned money for the scope I wanted. The reasons why I eventually went with James at Astro Sky were many and varied including an extremely competitive price (I actually got a great price due to a sale he was having last year and in fact I think he is having the same sale again at the moment), the positive reviews I read about the scopes function and high level of craftsmanship, reported excellent customer service, willingness to customize and the actual testing of the optics and mechanics under the stars before shipment. Although I cannot yet comment on the scope and its functions till I get delivery, the pictures and videos that have been sent are simply beautiful. One thing I can comment on though is James and his customer service which is simply exceptional. He has been very quick with all correspondence, upfront about any delays and the reasons why and simply a very warm and pleasant person to deal with! Having exchanged over 200 texts/emails since my scope started construction you get a sense of who someone is and the sense I get with James is he is as honest and friendly as they come.

The particulars of my scope; 14.5” f/5 (72.5 inch focal length) and a 2.6” secondary with sky commander. I chose a Terry Ostahowski primary and matching secondary, once again because of a solid reputation that Terry Ostahowski has earned. In fact after the first night of testing James texted me the following about the optics (reprinted here with his permission);

“…we stayed up till 3 am. Your optics is excellent, with 4.7mm (ES 82* E.P.) 392 power. Looked great on deep sky, Moon smallest crater ľ mile diameter. Jupiter and Saturn look great, saw moon shadow on Jupiter. You got an excellent mirror. On 24 mm (ES 82*) view over 1.07 degree wide, 77X. Seen 15 mag Galaxy. Cool!”

This link will show you my scope!! Talk about getting excited!!

Congratulations--looking forward to the first light report! A 14.5 f/5 hits a real sweet spot, I think. I'm sure you're happy to hear the report on your mirror too!

Great looking scope. Remember when you get a new scope you will you two will have to spend a lot of time together. That way there will be a permanent bond between the two of you.

Congrats on the scope I have seen yours in production and from what I saw it looks exceptional. James is almost finished with my 16. So mine is just behind yours.

Thank you all for the congrats!! I will definitely post first light reports. I appreciate everyone's positive comments.

cpr1, I remember your post a while back about seeing my scope in production when you visited James at his shop and your very positive comments about its construction and appearance made me feel I definitely made the right choice going with James at Astro Sky, thank you.

James has now installed the sky commander and it is now waiting testing.

Wow, absolutely beautiful. Those azimuth bearings look buttery smooth as well. I'm drooling. Eagerly awaiting your first light report.

No problem, James invited me to his observatory recently to star test your scope, and check out the progress on mine, but I was unable to make it that night. I wish I could have went.

Money well spent IMO. Congrats. ciel clair

I really look forward to your report and overall impressions concerning your scope. I am seriously considering purchasing an AstroSky dob in the future and have heard others favorable comments as to it's build quality. Being a Louisiana vendor and being from Louisiana sure would make it easy to pick up and save me shipping charges as well.

Most excellent! May your seeing be a good as your scope. My hopefully soon to be here 11" Zambuto Teeter STS Yard Cannon will also be a F/5 and have the Sky Commander. I swung for SIPS. I'll report back on with vs without. David

An update on the arrival of my scope....some good news and some, well not as good news. Unfortunately my street address was misspelled in shipment causing a couple days delay in delivery of the 6 boxes containing the scope and all its components. As a result I have thus far received only 4 of the 6 boxes, with hopefully the other 2 boxes being delivered tomorrow. The 4 boxes that have been delivered contains the rocker box, the mirror box, the Ostahowski 14.5" mirror and the mirror box case.

When I seen the outside of the box containing the rocker box my heart skipped a beat as there looked like perhaps some damage in the shipping process as both corners showed tears and rips.
