Hello,
Does anyone have any news about the EQ7 EQ8 mount? I checked a video in YouTube presenting the mount but it was placed in August 2011 and I have not heard any news from that date.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rrUwe3Se3Q
Thanks!

The EQ-7 evolved into the EQ-8, which is supposed to be available Real Soon Now.

There has been little news from skywatcher. I hope they haven't run into problems. Pretty quiet for a launch any day now.

Here's a video from last month -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fd95pnNOMcQ&feature=youtu.be
I have a deposit down on one. They were due this month but I've been told they received a batch of faulty bearings from a supplier which has delayed release by at least a month to April/May.

This looks very promising, can't wait to see it in production. Price point will be critical as usual. -Tim

Yep. Price will be critical. If it comes in much above the CGE Pro's current $4995 price, it will sell in low volumes IMO. The $7995 Paramount MX pretty much limits the upside pricing of this mount.
In several respects it looks like a scaled up CGE in basic layout. The L-arm polar scope is plain silly. It'd be easier to drift align the mount than align the polar scope to the mount. I wouldn'T be surprised to see the new Synscan software by a rebrand of NexStar. Why maintain two totally different sets of software under one roof? This might make it EQMOD unfriendly, though. It was funny that the journalist repeatedly compared the yet-to-be-released EQ8 with an AP1200 - a mount that has been out of production for awhile, and was replaced with the AP1600. Also if the capacity is 77# as he suggests that would place it closer to the AP900 than the AP1200/1600 in actual capacity.
If they bring it in at $5k it will be a hit.

Thanks for your replies, I think I will wait for the mount. I was planning to buy a CGE Pro but it's better to wait
For the size of the mount it is more focused to astrophotographers. I will use it with a C9.25 for galaxy astrophotography (f/6.3 and maybe f/10), maybe 5-10 subs.
I hope a reasonably priced product

Yes, the polar scope is the strangest design I've ever seen. If you plan to travel with the mount you must be very careful for not even touching it for being aligned with the mount. Strange design.

The motors are still steppers not servos so I would think EQmod could still be made to work. I agree the price point is important, and at the same price as a CGE pro I think the CGE pro will have a very difficult time.

The early adopters price over here averages to AU$4400 and we have a 10% goods and services tax on everything. I have no idea on the recommended retail.

Looks like the mount is now available in Austria, price is astonishingly low, 3500 EUR and that includes 20% VAT.

It sounds a bit too good to be true, waiting for some other EU dealers to announce the price...

That puts it around 4600 US. I can't help but notice that Celestron is currently discounting the CGE pro MASSIVELY. Is this a preemptive move to clear inventory before they debut the EQ8, possibly under the Celestron brand in the US?

Dunno. Possible. Thus far they've kept Synscan and NexStar systems separate. If they decided to standardize with the EQ-8, I'd expect it to be given servo motors, an NexStar MC board, and a NexStar HC.

I look for an update to the CGE Pro. Maybe CGEM Pro II similar to the EQ8 but with servos and NexStar.

It looks very sturdy, I think more than CGE Pro. Thanks for the video.

The guys at Teleskop Austria have EQ8 PE and guiding graphs available: EQ8 @ astronomieforum.at
PE curve looks to be under 10" peak. What do you guys think?
