Asteroid to Zoom By Earth This Weekend.....

The 330-foot-wide (100 meters) asteroid 2013 ET will miss Earth....

(Apparently our solar system is entering a realm of space littered with asteroids)...

Nah! I would think that these objects have been part of our Solar System for quite a while. We're all just trucking along together!

Evidently Our solar system moves with the Milky Way at approximately 500,000 MPH.

Capturing stray asteroids along the way with the Suns gravity..

No stray asteroids. These have been part of the solar System since the beginning. And close encounters have been with us since then as well. The only difference is that now we're in a better position to detect them, and thus more likely to worry about them.

They have very well defined paths, and they're in their home, the Solar System.

If the asteroids have very well defined paths then the Russian asteroid should of been anticipated to crash land in the USSR with world wide warnings..

The flaw in that, is that no body knew that specific rock even existed.

There is no flaw in that. If we do not know an asteroid’s orbit or that it even existed before it impacts Earth, we cannot assume it was not recently acquired by the sun's gravity on its path through the galaxy. The probability of this are of course small compared to that of it already being a native.

There is a paper that has calculated its trajectory and linked it to a known group...

Just because we don't know about it doesn't mean it's not already travelling on a well-defined path. It's obeying ll the laws of physics, whether we're following it or not. We don't define the path, gravity does.

In the imagination of Joe Public, it must seem there's an anomalous gathering of asteroidal material suddenly swarming about us. If he would consider just how short is the period of time (a couple of decades) in which such small bodies could be detected in time for warning, and brushed up on the most basic fundamentals of statistics, it would become obvious that we are almost certainly not just now in the midst of an abnormal swarming.

As to the extra-solar interloper hypothesis. Such bodies must necessarily be of exceedingly low space density. It requires only a consideration of the volume of space 'allocated' to each star in our neighborhood, which happens to be a nearly 7 light-year sphere. Any conceivable asteroid belt surrounding a star, even if completely flung outside its solar system, must fill a vastly larger volume than formerly occupied. And such objects are not likely to be captured by another star so quickly, and if so are expected to be on quite highly eccentric orbits, like some comets.

Statistics alone, and especially the fact of a not highly eccentric orbit, assures us of the very high probability of any given asteroid being of Solar system origin.

"This should be a wakeup call..." blah blah blah. As they used to say in the Wild West, "You never hear the one that gets you". With advance notice of a day or less, one of these is bound to hit sooner or later, and there's not gonna be a single thing we can do about it except hope in falls in the Middle of Nowhere.

Two small asteroids, both about the size of the Russian meteor, will be in Earth's neighborhood this weekend. Asteroid 2013 EC 20 passed just 93,000 miles away on Saturday March 9, 2013.

On Sunday March 10, 2013, Asteroid 2013 EN 20 will fly about 279,000 miles from Earth. Both were discovered just three days ago.

Needless to say we're at the mercy of the Cosmos...
