M51 – The Whirlpool Galaxy in Canes Venatici new
      #5724824 - 03/10/13 10:19 PM Attachment (49 downloads)

Telescope: Meade SC8 @ f/10, Orion Atlas EQ-G
Camera: Canon Rebel T2i
Filter: Orion Imaging Sky Glow Filter
Guiding: Orion Off-axis Guider, DSI Pro III, PHD
Exposure: 16x240sec, ISO 800 saved as RAW
Darks: Internal
Flat: Synthetic
Software: Backyard EOS, Deep Sky Stacker, Photoshop

Eh, the transparency wasn’t the greatest for this one so I ended up struggling with the skyglow quite a bit, but I’m not too unhappy with this one. There’s always room for improvement.

Excellent image John! I can't wait to give M51 a try with my 8" SCT.

Good effort; bit noisy due to the conditions you describe. Another one...

Thanks! Yeah, it's a tad noisier than I'd like. That seems to be coming from trying to lift detail above the skyglow as this essentially is a form of clipping. It is not as harsh as true clipping, but it still gives a noisy image. I'm tempted to try taking luminance data with my monochrome CCD and borrow the color data from this image.

So much to try, so few clear nights...
