I noticed this morning that CDC 3.8 stable is now ready for download and 3.9xxx unstable is also available for download. There have been some changes that will effect the catalogs in currently used editions so read the install notes.
I think I will take this opportunity to back up my catalogs, uninstall my current CDC and do a new install of CDC 3.8

Just installed it in Linux yesterday. Haven't gotten around to the catalogs yet though.

So what catalogs are recommended to be installed over the default ones?

At http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/download, see the section Additional Catalog: Stars catalogs, DSO catalogs and, if you want it, the new UCAC4 catalog V2.
Follow the advisory "Be sure to also update your stars and DSO additional catalog" which is in the Skychart 3.8 section above.

I'm sticking to 3.4 as long as the option to show objects below the horizon in views over 180° wide isn't re-introduced.

I'm on 3.6 and have lots of settings tweaked the way I like them. What's the best way to upgrade to 3.8, to get rid of what needs to be eliminated while maintaining my customized settings? Do I uninstall first, or will 3.8 overlay and automatically rid my PC of 3.6?

That made it painless and it worked perfectly. Thanks Rod. One more question. I also installed 3.8 on my Asus netbook, which had no previous version of Cartes du Ciel, so all settings are default. Is there any way to copy the customized settings from my desktop to the netbook?

Actually the settings a particular user has, is stored in a directory in their account. The installation is system wide is in a different place. Granted that in some situations the format of the files used to store the settings can change. In going from 3.6 to 3.8 that hasn't happened.
I uninstalled 3.6 and installed 3.8 and things started up where I had left off previously. I wiped out my earlier install completely to get rid of unnecessary and older catalogs. Things are more responsive with 3.8 and the newer catalogs.

It truly amazes me what Cartes Du Ciel can do as a freeware program. I am truly impressed with it's sophistication.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Rod. I received a reply from Patrick yesterday on how to easily copy the configuration file from my desktop to my netbook.

Patrick's response: "On the desktop run skychart, open the menu File / Save As. Copy the .cdc3 file to the netbook. Run skychart on the netbook, open the menu File / Open, select the file".
Step by step (as I did it):
Insert a USB flash drive into the desktop. Launch Cartes du Ciel Click on "File" Click on "Save as" Select the USB flash drive Name the file (nnn.cdc3) Click "Save"
The above copies the configuration file to the USB flash drive.
Inset the USB flash drive into the netbook. Launch Cartes du Ciel Click on "File" Click on "Open" Select the USB flash drive Select the .cdc3 file Click "Open"
If everything is OK, click "Setup" and "Save Configuration now".
