need lighter counter weight for CG-5
      #5733246 - 03/14/13 11:27 PM

Hi everyone

I got my CG-5 mount today, but I have a little problem with the counter weight, it is too heavy to balance my 80mmED OTA, i need a lighter one, maybe a 5lb, any advice?
I have been looking online to find one, but seems there is not many options? what's the good place to find stuff like that?
Thanks, Y.Fan

I have a 7.5lb that I got from Orion. I don't know of anything lighter off-hand.

7.5lb, it might work, I just did a rough calculation, any thing less than 10lb should work well.

there is a (damnable pricey) Vixen counterweight that's 4.2lb

http://telescopes.net/store/vixen-2577-counterweight-1-9kg-4-2lb.html

this would fit the shaft of a CG5.

I have 2 of the Orion 7.5 lb weights and they fit perfectly and match the Celestron finish too. The Orion counterweights are slightly smaller outside diameter than the standard Celestron 11 lb weight.

ScopeStuff has counterweights that screw into the end of the shaft where the 'toe saver' bolt goes. Look for those.

If you can't find one used, I can make you one for much cheaper than a new one would cost. I think I could do it for maybe $20 shipped, depending on where you live.

(don't everyone come asking me for counterweights now, this is not a repeat offer! haha)

Thank you jbalsam for the offer, I think I will just buy one from orion, the 7.5lb will work for me. thank you again.

An old sock with marbles?

I have lost too many marbles to offer to build you one

I use the Orion 7.5 CW with my 80mm refractor. Works just fine. Mounts just about have way up on the shaft.

How about a ScopeStuff shaft extension? One of those. along with a 1lbs toe saver, also from ScopeStuff, allowed me to go back to one CW.
