Dear observers,
2011L4 has reached the northern hemisphere. We had cloudy and cold weather here for some days with lots of snow. But yesterday around sunset the sky cleared. I was prepared and stood with a pair of 7x50 binoculars and my 8 cm APO at a location with free view down to the western horizon. 50 min after sun set I could glimpse the comet, at first with the binocular. I could follow it until it stood 4° above the horizon. Detecting the comet with the unaided eye was difficult.
Please enjoy the sketch! The image on the left side is mirror reversed.

Uwe
I am so glad to see that you are able to view the comet! Nice details in your sketch, especially in the nucleus. Wunderbar!
We are still waiting in Portland Oregon, after constant clouds for a week now.
Looking forward to your future observations and sketches,
Prost!

Uwe,
That is a wonderful, great pair of sketches. I look forward to putting a scope of some aperture on this comet too. I was able to see it with 50mm but it is bright enough for a big aperture closeup.

Comet C2011L4 PanSTARRS has been a rather hard target for everybody in Europe, thanks to continent-wide cloud coverage. Even in normally sunny Cyprus we have been almost unable to see it as we have been under constant cirrus cover. I was very fortunate to be able to locate the comet through a cloud hole on Wednesday evening from Larnaca, and I made a sketch myself... Hopefully the weather will clear over the weekend for a decent view. The sketch shows what I saw through my 15x70 binoculars as the comet was palying "hide and seek" through the thin cirrus striations...

Nice sketch. I could see much more tail in 15x70s. In 40s, the comet lost a lot. I did wish I'd taken a scope to see if I could see any detail around the coma. I found the comet to be easy to see with the naked eye. Glen

Hi Frank, yesterday PanStarrs was possible 'naked eye' but less than the day before, so the comet will be more and more is most visible in the sky more dark but probably already fading. Note that the light of the moon also has effects. What´s your idea Uwe ?

Michel,
That is a beauty. I really like the way you make it look way beyond the Earth's atmosphere. Wonderful.
