I am currently debating between three SCTs for my next telescope. If you had the choice between the standard 9.25" CPC or the 8" CPC HD, which would you choose and why? Are the new HD scopes better to the point it would justify getting the 8" over the 9.25" standard? I am primarily interested in visual observing and planetary imaging (using altaz). If I ever get serious about DSO imaging, I'll probably step up to a good GEM. Thanks.

Since you have a big Dob I assume that is your dark site scope for DSOs. In that case you have high-end aperture covered. My choice given your stated desires would be the 8 edge, which has received very positive reviews for its optics and flat field.

I agree with Mike. But IMO you should get the 8" HD w/ GEM. The resale market for CPC's is not that great!

8" Edge by far.... It looks like celestron replaced the CG5ASGT EQ mount with the new advanced VX mount and upgraded some features...
Here is a package thats cheaper than either CPC you listed... Great for visual, and will get you started in AP as well..
