Messier Sketching Marathon Results
      #5736213 - 03/16/13 12:42 PM

Hi all,

A few nights ago, I ran and sketched the Messier Marathon from my property. Jeremy Perez sketched the marathon in 2009 and I just had to try it for myself! On the night of the 13th/14th, I observed 106 and sketched 103.

I'm doing another attempt tonight at our club's marathon event. Hopefully my stamina will prevail as I'm still not fully recovered from the last one.

You can find the full report, sketches, and timed results here: 2013 March 13/14 Messier Sketching Marathon

Sorry it's a long report, but hopefully it'll give others that haven't attempted the marathon a good idea of what to expect and how to plan.

Frankly astonishing. Doing a marathon with a 16" is not easy to begin with. I noticed Tylenol on your gear list. No wonder.

Erika,

Congratulations, that is quite an achievement.
I'll bet the night went by faster than you expected.
You certainly will get them them all next time (weather permitting).

Frank

Erika,

A wonderful and I hope satisfying experience for you! I am sure I could never do a Messier Marathon and sketch each object I saw in five minutes. Nope, I don't think I can do that. Again, congrats on completing such a wonderful project.

Congratulations! I agree the Year Round Messier Marathon book is incredible! I am doing a more leisurely stroll with a multi-night marathon with about fifteen objects remaining. I will explore the sketching aspect as that would be a better and more concrete log than my brief observations like "small and diffuse" which really do no mean anything when I review this a year later. The next time through will surely be faster than my first run where I am discovering many objects for the first time. Excellent write-up and accomplishment. Well done!

Amazing!

I haven't even viewed that many objects in one night, let alone draw them, LOL.

Nice work!

Cheers,

Thank you very much, everyone. It's been great fun. I did a second run with our club's event this weekend.

2013 March 16/17th Messier Sketching Marathon report

We got clouded out by half past midnight, but I managed 42 sketches between 2022-0023 ST that night and even nabbed M74! I made better time up to that point and felt much more relaxed. Really looking forward to next year's event!

Wow... Impressive. Messier Marathons hard enough, I can only imagine how hard sketching them is.

Hi Erika,

What a great effort and accomplishment. I enjoyed reading your report. Personally, I got distracted by comet PANSTARRS around the horizon

Thanks everyone.

I had to force myself to ignore PanStarrs both sessions so that I could concentrate on the marathon. Thankfully, I've had several observations of PanStarrs so far so that I don't feel guilty for not catching the comet during the marathon nights.

Andy and Preston, the sketches were bare minimum of the objects with a few field stars to help with identification. Each sketch only took a minute or two tops and you can see by the sketches that they are poor quality. I have to keep reminding myself that the intent was to catch them all through sketching...not long, detailed sketches from thorough observations that I typically would strive for. It was a race against time after all.

BTW, Andy, talent isn't required for sketching observations. All sketches at the eyepiece are useful!

Still, a phenomenal achievement to catch them all on sketch in a marathon.

Erika, your report is impressive, but looking through the sketches really made me realize what an accomplishment it is!
I sketch most of my observations, and to see all of them lined up like that from one night's work... it's inspiring.
I have yet to do a marathon, but I know now that I will.
Thanks for sharing your work with us.
John.
