Night vision webcam to monitor scope taking pics
      #5736541 - 03/16/13 03:48 PM

Hi,

Does anyone use a USB webcam to remotely monitor their equipment (e.g. for cables about to snag)? If so, which one would you recommend?

The ones I've seen seem to have bright LED's that could interfere with the ccd camera.

Thanks,

Brian

There not bright LED's.. those bulbs around the camera lens are IR bulbs.

Brian,

Typical IR illuminator LEDs are either centered around 850nm or 940nm types.
Astro's H-alpha is 656nm. Usually you astroimager would have an enhanced IR-cut filter there. Some will have a cut-off around 700-800nm range but still depend on the filter made/model. Certain light leak from your IR LED can happen so point these as far away from your astroimager (and other IR reflective objects) as possible. You have to adjust position or tone down the power to test it out.

Of course, for best astroimaging result, disable the distractors .

Clear Skies!

Dave, Some of those LEDS are definitely visible white or red on webcams, but I take your point - I just need to identify which ones are which.

Using the info from ccs_hello I think it's 940nm LEDS I really want, thanks ccs_hello.

Korborh That looks like a good cam, but wireless won't work for my set up. I have got an Ethernet cable hooked up and just got hold of a device that takes 4 usb devices as inputs and an Ethernet cable as output; at the pc end a similar device tricks the pc into thinking the 4 usb devices are physically connected to it. Works great, but means I haven't got a spare Ethernet end in the observatory now.

Cheers,

Brian

And a home security cam to monitor it all...

But who's monitoring the monitor...

I keep telling the wife I need to stay home as there's so much to do, but she doesn't seem to understand...

I tried a webcam that had night vision but didn't work too well. The black scope didn't show up and I finally gave up. I was always concerned the LED's would mess withe the camera. I moved to a .001 lumen security camera and a usb capture card. Best money I ever spent. I also replaced my finderscope with one and use it to align the scope remotely.

Hi Steve,

That sounds like a neat idea - would double up as a cloud cam too...

Which one do you use - and any chance of a pic of your set up?

Cheers,

Brian
