Comet Pan-STARRS and the 1 Day Old Moon new
      #5732484 - 03/14/13 04:05 PM Attachment (45 downloads)

On the evening of March 12, 2013, I was treated to a pleasant view of the 1.26 day old Moon (1.8% illuminated) and comet C/2011 L4 Pan-STARRS from 07:00pm to 07:20pm local time Mesa, Arizona. I had an excellent view of the clear western sky and I could see the comet naked eye about 6.5 diameters to the south of the Moon.
To assist in making the rough graphite sketch I used a 5x 50mm finder scope removed from an Orion telescope. After returning home from Arizona to Illinois I made a color drawing from field notes and the graphite sketch. I was planning on a color sketch but the number of colors need and blending seemed too much for the 30 minutes to comet set.
Sketching:
Graphite pencils: 6B, 4B and 2B also black and white pastel pencils on white sketching paper.
Color drawing was made with black and white charcoal pencils and an assortment of color pencils on medium blue paper.

Peter, Michel, Jim and Jef,

Thanks for your comments on my sketch and drawing.
I'm glad I was out of Illinois with its constant cloud cover so I'd have a chance to see this.

Frank

Peter, Tom, Andre and Jean,

I was in the right place Tuesday night, by 6am I was on a plane back to Chicago and I have seen rain, snow and clouds ever since returning. .. Some thing never change.
Thank you all for the nice words.

Frank

Tommy5,

I also looked with a pair of binoculars from a park with a good western horizon Wednesday night. Although it was reasonably clear and the Moon was visible, I could not pick the comet out 45 minutes after sunset even though I must have had it in the field of view. Transparency is often poor a few degrees above the horizon. A few more days should help if it clears again.

Frank, these illustrations are incredible! Even more so because I have yet to enjoy seeing PanSTARRS in cloud filled CT. I love them both, although there is something decidedly special about that black and white.

Nice sketch Frank.

I haven't had much luck with the weather to see the comet.

Best,

Eric

Mike and Eric,

Thank you both. Since last Tuesday the 12th I have not had any luck either. The skies of Arizona are vastly superior to the skies of Illinois.

Frank
