Comet PanSTARRS 13th March new
      #5736443 - 03/16/13 02:41 PM Attachment (36 downloads)

Hello all

I have tried to observe Comet Panstarrs every evening since the 10th, but have only succeeded once due to cloud.

Here is a sketch and a couple of photos from Wednesday evening.
The comet was easy to find in my 70mm binoculars but impossible with the naked eye - my skies are never all that transparent, I think due to only being 8mtrs above sea level in an area which should be marshy if it weren't for the activities of farmers draining it.
Anyway, the 'nucleus' was bright and compact with a fuzzy coma three times its diameter, and a fairly long and fat, but faint, tail with a slightly brighter central stripe.

The photos were taken with my lumix DMC FZ150, 5 secs, f/5.6, iso 100. The full zoom one has been enhanced in GIMP.

Cloudy again tonight!

Superb, Chris! Both the drawing and the picture are absolutely beautiful and are very much like my observation yesterday. Congratulations!

Peter

Beautiful detail in your sketch, Chris! Delicate pencil work, my friend.

Lovely Chris, nice sketch and happy to know that you were able to observe near this nice city of York.

Nice sketch!

Interesting, most observers see a brighter right side of the tail.

yeah, I realise that, it was all very tenuous against the brightly lit and slightly murky horizon, so I suppose I may have got it wrong, I hadn't seen many other decent sketches or photos before Wednesday afternoon and it's what it looked like to me at the time.
