Orange Tube C8
      #5740988 - 03/18/13 03:42 PM

Just got a C8. Has smooth orange paint, next version forks without holes, secondary has no plastic cover with 4 screws - one in center and ribbed back. No serial nos. anywhere but synchronous motors have a 76 or 78 datecode. Drive has orange 3-prong cord. All screws are stainless button head hex and tube has a sticker with Manufactured under US Patents. These seem to be conflicting clues as to the date of manufacture. And the wedge mount has 4 feet and a leveling bubble just like my C5+. Any ideas as to the age?

No serial number under the cap on the secondary holder?

Sounds like the wedge IS from a C5. I don't think that the table top wedge was sold with anything else. The C8 sounds like it should be about '77 from the change over from the sand cast to diecast forks. Smooth paint and alloy secondary holder were being phased out at that time. Check the motor dates carefully. Easy to mistake a "6" for an "8". Possible one of the motors could have been replaced with a used unit, too.

The OT that came in today has a 5000s serial number, plastic secondary holder and pebbly paint. I make it a '78.

Thanks to all for your help! We got an hour of clear sky here in eastern NC just now and checked collimation - very pleased and I'm not going to touch it - and had a brief look at the moon terminator. Nice images with a TV 32 Plossl. Very satisfied with my vintage scope! I was afraid I should have hung on to my C5+ but this is just what I wanted. If I'd still had the C5 wedge I could have compared them; it threw me off in the dating. I'll check the synchronous motor date codes again. Didn't get to try the rest of the Celestron Kellners - maybe tomorrow. Thanks again for the help...

Sounds just like my 1977 C8. Everything in your description applies to mine as well except that mine has the standard tripod.

Here it is. Pretty clean for its age. It did come in the original metal trunk.

Looks very nice, lovely! Looks to be very well cared for, a great find.

The power supply for the base looks modified, there appears to be an on off switch and I thought the later mounts had an 3 pin oval plug in socket on the underside of the base whilst the earlier ones had a 2 pin plug in socket on the side?

Have you got a picture of the secondary / corrector?

James

ps I would agree that the wedge is not original.

There is an "ON/OFF" switch on the base with a round hole with grommet and orange three-prong plug. The switch is labeled with what looks like a factory label but the cord does not look old enough to be original.

Just noticed there's a shim floating around in the tube. I can see it in the pic of the secondary. When I took it off to clean it, there were only 2 shims in place and I don't think it had been cleaned before - hazy film on the inside and I had to soften the retainer ring and secondary bond with alcohol to remove them.

I think the wedge is an original C5 tabletop wedge.

Thanks for the pic of the secondary, that looks like the style I would expect for the versions where the serial number was on a plate on the side of the base.

With die cast forks that would suggest production around 1976 to 1978.

I think the base has been worked on and modified and the serial number plate was probably removed or lost then. As far as I am aware the vintage orange tubes never had an on off switch and the power cord plugged into the base rather than being permanently attached.

Another thing I've just noticed is that the fork arms have been swapped around so that the RA slow mo and lock knobs are on the front side of the base rather than being on the rear where the dec slow mo is.

James

This is the 3 pin power connector (inside red square) I would expect (shot is of a 1980 C5 but I believe the base for the later C5s was the same as the C8. Picture was taken from underneath looking up at scope mounted on a wedge on a tripod.

You're absolutely right about the fork arms - it felt awkward last night but I couldn't put my finger on why. Excitement at actually viewing with it, perhaps? I've just put them right and it looks and feels correct now. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Nice looking scope redcat, I have a vintage C8 as well and love it, take a look at the CAT forum and maybe post these pics there too. You'll get a lot of good info from this site. I'm in Eastern NC too, maybe we should get our scopes together some night, lol.

That wegde looks like the new version one arm white C5 that came out in the 90's.
