It’s cloudy, been cloudy, nut’n but clouds in the forecast. Might as well post another image of a long-period variable near minimum. This is S Gem right around its most recent minimum at about magnitude 14.4. I really enjoy looking at the image on a good monitor. Like the image that I posted of T Gem, S Gem is a beautiful red ember, the only red star in the field. Now is a good time to start keeping an eye on S Gem as it has begun a relatively rapid rise in brightness that will peak somewhere between 8th and 9th magnitude. In modest size scopes it’ll slowly appear against the background sky eventually brightening to be comparable to the brightest stars in the field. S Gem does a fairly steady rise from minimum to maximum. Some of these pause about halfway up as they brighten, but not S Gem, so it'll be fun to watch... if the weather ever clears!
