Hi Andy
Our CAS Starfest 2013 is planned for August 3 with the 4th, 10th, 11th as rain/cloud dates.
It's held at Hopewell National Furnace next to French Creek State park in Pa. southwest of Pottstown.
The skies are good for a public star party, for we need an area that’s easy for the public to find, but at least dark enough for them to see great views through the telescopes.
Included of course before nightfall are presentations by CAS members, and usually a special guest speaker from NASA or someone from the astro department from a college/university. Also many astro gifts, including telescopes are usually raffled.

Well done ,as always, love these videos. I will say my skill set probably is no where good enough to find all these galaxys, but it is fascinating watching the videos, and listening to your accounts.

Thanks Jim and Andy and we're glad people are liking the videos. I may throw in another galaxy or two for the April GL.
Andy, you certainly have the "tools" (scopes) to observe all these galaxies. Tracking down galaxies can take some practice, and it's kind of like riding a bike, as in the more you do it, the easier it gets. You'll develop ways that best suit you and your scopes.
If you're just star hopping (or galaxy hopping) without a GoTo or digital setting circles (like both my large dobs and the 4" refractor), I then like the combination of a zero power finder like a Telrad or Rigel with a good finder scope. On large scopes, I like the larger finders of 60mm or more (I use a 80mm on the 22"). A good detailed chart or charts that are available in print form or a computer chart program is essential. Oh, and remember patience.
If you're going to NEAF (Saturday) I'll be there as usual, and we can talk a bit about galaxy observing.
Now if the skies clear around here...
Clear Dark Skies,
Karl E.O.H.

I too use a telrad and 50mm finder on the 16 inch. Sadly the 16 inch is setting in the house, I knew about the new scope curse , but dern. Of course the last 2 night have been clear early , but are clouded up by 11 pm when I get off By the time I get Elekta to dark skys Ill have to relearn the constellations again, sheeesh
As for NEAF I really wanted to go one day this year, Im hoping.

Good report......glad you got good skies for your birthday. The sketch, your wifes? , was excellant. Glad you got the old scope out again. I had originally planned to buy a 12 inch but when the 16 came up for sale , at a really reasonable price, I jumped. The 16 does fit in the back seat of my little ole Ford Taurus.

Yep, my wife's, though the next video may have one of mine.
I always say get the biggest scope you can afford, handle, and transport.

Hi Andy
Thanks, and I hope all are enjoying these, and of course inspiring them on galaxy observing.
Sounds like you need to ask the property owners to put in some nice cement observing pads
