Elon Musk in 70s Van on Mars
      #5743988 - 03/19/13 08:57 PM

Here’s a link to a humorous new interview of Elon Musk (chairman of SpaceX, Tesla Motors & Solar City) supposedly in a 70s van parked on Mars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns0IHCj2q-E&feature=youtu.be&a

Well, that was... different.

BTW, while I wish Musk nothing but success, I think he's wrong about the prospects for terraforming Mars. I agree that our future as a species is in space, but not Mars. There are better and even easier possibilities.

You're gonna talk about the Oort cloud now, aren't you?

I think unanswered questions about our future in space include gravity (which can be addressed by rotating spaceships or colonies)

and much more importantly

the minimum size of an ecosystem to sustain a colony.

Growing a few monocultures for food, and recycling waste, are ways to survive in a spaceship to get somewhere, but may never be long term ways to live there.

We might need all the room from terraforming because a sustainable colony within our solar system may prove to require an entire ecosystem, somewhere in scale between the Big Island of Hawaii, or Borneo, or Australia, with orders of magnitude more non-human biomass than human biomass, maybe even requiring some transplanted 'wilderness'...

I believe the SpaceX cargo ship docked with the ISS...

Plus the SpaceX cargo ship can reenter the atmosphere...

For a ride in a van and a chicken sandwich, I might!

Here's a link to a more serious 21-minute interview of Musk describing the three companies he runs, SpaceX, Solar City & Tesla Motors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgKWPdJWuBQ
