Floor Color?
      #5746983 - 03/21/13 07:17 AM

My 12'x12' Backyard Observatories ROR is a year old and a pleasure to use. I built it myself and left the floor with a white primer. I intended to paint it later with a dark non-skid paint. In some ways the white floor has come in handy for finding things in the dark but it makes it a bit brighter inside. So I was wondering about the best color for a ROR floor. I would be interested in what others use.

Bryan

Mine is still plywood-colored. I've thought perhaps a brick-red color might be nice.....

I carpeted mine with indoor/outdoor carpet; that's a gray/blue color. I was able to lay it in one piece. It's easy to keep clean also!

Dark grey interlocking foam tiles. Easy on the feet, easy on things that drop/fall.

I had considered those Karen; however I don't think they would have stood up to dragging my heavy observing chair across them. Lifting the chair completely off the ground would not be something I would look forward to each time I needed to move it.

Bet they are wonderful for standing however! Not to mention saving a valuable eyepiece that mysteriously takes on a life of it's own, & leaps out of your hands!

I have 1/4" athletic matting in mine. It is a harder rubber than the foam mats and my chair rolls with ease. Yet it absorbs any impact and impervious to moisture.

I thought about a carpet but I am concerned about the mold and mildew problems. With the roof rolled off, there is plenty of moisture. Optics and mold are a bad combo. I do like the color idea.

The carpet is used is a synthetic stuff, with no underlay, designed for boats.... never a sniff of mold now after 6 years....

The synthetic carpet idea looks good. What color did you use?

The Obs is large enough for a pier/wedge and a CG5-GT but not so large that I need to roll around on a chair/stool between them. If it was much bigger I'd probably go with something you could roll a chair on. I tend to be more of a stand/lean observer than one who sits for long periods.

Dark brown oil based paint over the plywood for my CatsEye. It has stood up very well for 20 years plus. I have a few smaller rugs placed at locations I typically stand. All rugs are darker colors.

Just a neutral grey. I recently added some inexpensive Oriental-style area rugs for a dash of interest.

I would still paint the floor so the plywood doesn't soak up moisture
