Interesting report Scott. Last weekend i had my 80ED that, while not new, had not gone for a ride to a dark sky before. Turned out to be EXTREMELY dark and transparent. M33 naked eye, etc. Anyway, I was floored what scope could show in excellent conditions. Quality 80mm glass is very versatile.

Jay, I agree. From a dark site a little 80mm scope can make your jaw drop. A small scope is also a lot easier to haul to those dark sites.

I broke out my C102 tonight. The moon was too bright for the Veil but I did catch 27 objects altogether including 16 double stars. Four in Cepheus that I don't observe to much. Xi, Delta, Beta, and Omicron. The seeing was a bit poor though. It felt good to take to long refractor for spin.

Broke out the "blue C102" too. It was a far cry from the experiences some 2 weeks ago due to the moon. Thanks for the tips on the Cepheus doubles John, will give them a try. Thanks to Jake Saloranta's star hopping tip I found NGC40 but it was boring. A grey patch right in the middle of 2 faint stars. The central star was easily seen though, but it fell short in comparison with the other (bright) beautiful planetaries that are around in the summer skies. I agree that a 80 will show a lot too under dark skies Scott, I'm thinking of getting a ST80 as bike transportable sky sweeper.
Clear skies, Jacques

They are all fine doubles. Omicron is a bit tighter. I had some trouble with the split last night due to poor seeing.

I just came in from giving them a run. You're right John, they're all fine doubles. The seeing must have been really poor because Omicron was nice and easy but I was blessed with very good seeing. Delta Cygni was clearly split at 160x, even a little better at 200x (the seeing was good otherwise the companion would have disappeared in the diffraction ring of the brightest component). Izar Bootes looked excellent too at 160x. Pi Aquillae was split too but not obvious with black space between the components. I'm confident that it can be done with the 4" without moon and excellent seeing at around 200x and up. Caught 3 craterlets on the floor of Plato too.
Sorry Scott, I didn't want to change subject from the original thread but I think that it's great that some replies are inspirational (like John's reply was for me), isn't it all about spreading idea's too?

Great. I caught Izar last night but again the split was fuzzy due to the seeing. I didn't try the others you mentioned. I tend to go for doubles more when the moon is out. That's when I pull out my C102.

I just got in from a short session with my XT4.5. The sky was steadier so I was able to split Izar better tonight. I also caught Xi and Beta Cephei before some high clouds moved in. With an almost full moon I was only able to make out the brightest stars so I packed it in.

I took the AT1010 out last night, mainly to try (out of curiosity) the setting circles on my GP-DX (next to useless). Once that was out of the way I decided to see if I could find some as-yet-unfound-by-me M objects by starhopping. The sky down sourth in Sagittarius and Ophiuchus was too murky to see even the big globs so I tried a bit higher. I couldn't find M15 which was lost in the moonlight, but I did manage to see some objects a bit farther from the moon, including M56, M52, and M103.

I got my AT out last night before some high clouds moved in. I caught 30 objects altogether. 19 DSOs including the NGC 6992 part of the Veil with an OIII filter. I was suprised to catch the small globular NGC 6638 in Sagittarius. I also had nice splits of Izar and Epsilon Lyrae. I was extremely impressed with the view I had of M25 with a 10mm Radian. It is still imprinted on my mind today.

John, 30 objects is quite a feat with an 80mm scope. How was the Veil?

Thanks. As you know the AT is a great performer. The Veil was not a clear as I had hoped. I saw a fuzzy arc with some areas a bit more resolved. I have seen it better. At the time I observed it high clouds were starting to come in. Even though the area of sky around the Veil looked pretty clear I'm sure that was a factor in how good my view was.
BTW - I see you still have your CR 150. No luck getting rid of it?

I haven't bagged the Veil yet, but I also haven't gone looking yet. I am waiting on an OIII purchase before I try. Thanks John.
